I spent my labor day weekend doing stuff. I looked in on a tenant with a leak issue. I rode my horse on a two mile trail ride. I helped gather up and stack four hundred square bales (and fell one leg through a hay-covered hole in the barn floor). I helped a younger person (age like 20) with horsemanship skills and saddle fit. I attended a cookout (featuring amazing brisket). I mixed up fifteen pounds of hot sausage and froze it. And I tore out the crappy tub surround and drywall, hung cement board, and tiled the tub surround in nice tile that matches my felted bath mat.

There is a picture. )

I had invited friends to visit this weekend coming up. They'd been on the calendar since October, iirc. I emailed them earlier this week to confirm (because covid and stuff) that they were indeed coming. They said they were, yep, as of Wednesday.

I do not have to put *Spoiler Alert* in here. The fact that it's a post is sufficiently spoilery already. )

Today I improved the laundry room window. It's had a hole in the lower pane since I moved in. (Not a big hole, a bb-gun pellet sized hole.)

In the twenty years I've been here, I haven't repaired the window because it's a dumb-ass crank-to-open thing that tilts out at a slant. I do not know how to put panes in that style of window. Also, it doesn't crank-to-open and is stuck in the shut position. It isn't exactly WELL shut, just mostly. In truth, it leaks like hell and there is no storm window and I've had it duct-taped around the edges for the last twenty years. Because I am classy like that, is why.

Working on it involves crawling over the dryer and standing on a five-gallon bucket while reaching across the water heater to the window. That may also have had something to do with my lack o' enthusiasm for fixing this issue.

Today was the day, though. )

With the luxury of a four whole contiguous days off of work, you'd think there would be home improvements galore to report. However, I spent the time doing social things with people and thus didn't really improve so much as all that.

But improvements no matter how small are still improvements... )

I painted behind the china cupboard and behind the stove and above the cabinets. I have a teensy bit more to do (including some drywall touch-up and stuff) plus the rest of the hallway and then the kitchen-livingroom continuum is painted. The part that is done looks damn nice. My paintings (artwork) look a lot better for being cleaned off and windex'd where appropriate.

What else did you do? )

I have measured my exceptionally large* bathroom and determined that I would like a bathmat that is approximately 32" x 24". Like, that'll fit and be nice. It's a good size.

And then what? )

So I bought paint for the kitchen/living room which is more or less one open area in my ginormous 768 square foot house. It's a sorta peachy white. Like it's not quite white nor is it actually a peach color. Think of it as a warm-toned white. (It is not white. White trim would look very white against it. But it's not, like, hugely pink.)

And I have Painted Some Things!

Tell me of your Pilgrim's Progress!! )

I mentioned Home Improvement feels the other day. And so today there has been a Home Improvement. A Kitchen improvement, one I've been wanting done for quite a while.

I've been in my house for about twenty years now. In that time, I have not redone anything or repainted anything or upgraded anything. It's... looking a bit shabby here. The carpets are visibly faded. The paint is definitely not fresh-looking anymore. I did replace three windows a few years ago but I didn't ever trim around them even though I own a miter saw.

It's not like I don't know how to do home improvement stuff. I am totally completely handy at home improvement. Like, that's my fucking job. I get PAID to do the wild thing.

And now I am feeling all interested in Home Improvement at my own home. )
