Well, they're mostly-done. I need to wash-n-block and put in the sleeve for the elastics, but all the interesting stuff is done. Now, I just need to keep them from falling down (for better trampling) and we'll be all set.

Infidels worldwide tremble at my approach. )

HoHI update: Heel flaps and heel turning successfully completed. Knitting television is now (again) Hikaru no Go, which I find soothing. I have about three rounds knitted since I got the gusset stitches picked up. Progress is being made, albeit slowly.

I went to the last day of the PA Ren Faire today with cousin Heather, baby Tess, brother Joe, his wife, their kids. (Nobody was cooked or served. I'm just sayin'.)

There's probably something wrong with me. )

The riding lesson thing went well. I like the instructor -- she knows her shit -- and I'm going back next Thursday, 5:30. It may take a while to fix the problems, but she definitely gives thirty bucks of value in an hour.

HoHI: I started to pick up gusset stitches on the heels. Yuck. DO NOT LIKE!! Totally DO NOT LIKE. I ripped back to the heel split. I'm trying again for a suitable heel treatment. NOT having one I don't like. Not. Not even to be done sooner. I have spent too much time on the HoHI to have any part of them be in the DO NOT LIKE category. I should adore every bit of these socks... so, back to the drawing board.

Socky Mc Socks update: Heel flap done. Heel turned. Next up: picking up stitches for gussets, a tedious and annoying part of the process that is going to wait until I'm less bleary.

The corrugate ribbing worked really well on the heel flaps. To make it flat and not-yucky on the turning part of the heel (which goes right under the wearer's heel), I did the last two rows before turning in regular stockinette, not in ribbing. Turning was via the metric of "leave three stitches in the middle and turn as per the HJS Studio Instructions". Interestingly, the pattern decreased from 2x2 to 1x1 in the turning of the heel. It looks kind of neat, really.

I'll be picking up the gusset stitches, later, in a 2x2 stripey pattern. I'm not sure that this will guarantee a neat flow of pattern down to the sole of the sock, but I think I can live with stripes. I like stripes. Stripes are good.

I also got two Walker stitch dictionaries in the mail today and now have sort of grandiose plans for sort of an aran-cabled sock thing. Not that I need another project just yet, but having over-a-year knitting time on sock projects really cuts down on the money I spend on yarns.

The HoHI are now at the exciting heel division. Actually, they're a couple of rows after that. Strategically, I've had to rip back once -- starting out with corrugate ribbing is not-so-good if your black and red colors don't match up on the black-n-red of the previous row. Ugly purl bumps. Ugly. So, first row is all knit. I learned that the hard way.

Flat two-color knitting isn't all *that* bad. I only had to learn one new skill (continental purling) in order to proceed. The internetwebmotron had instructions for continental purling with a video and everything, so it was okay. (I hate how stupid my hands feel when I'm trying to teach them to do new things.) I split the stitches into slightly uneven halves. There are eighteen more stitches on the top-of-the-foot part than on the bottom of the foot part, but that should not make a huge amount of difference since there are 49 stitches on the heel and 67 on the not-a-heel. Yes. At the ankle, the damn socks are 116 stitches around. I have fat ankles and I knit small.

There will be pictures of heel flaps as soon as I have enough heel flap to make a meaningful picture. I have five rows (on each sock) but that's not enough yet for a picture.

In other news, the nice people at Embarq sent us a check for fifty thousand dollars and change. Apparently they were not missing a decimal place and they really did mean ten thousands instead of just ordinary thousands. Yay.

I am a slow and pathetic knitter. However, there has been progress on the HoHI and we are now seven rows, just seven rows, from the exciting heel division. Once the stitches are divided in half, then I'll knit the heel flap (which I will hopefully be doing in corrugated ribbing, barring disasters). That should go pretty speedily once I figure out how to do it.

Once the heel flaps are knitted, then I'll be turning the heel (not sure how that's going to work with two colors but there are internetwebmotron directions for REGULAR turning-the-heel and I feel sure I'll be able to muddle through). After that, I will pick up stitches to make the heel gusset and knit decreasing until I'm back to where I was when I stopped at the ankle. Only the top of the sock, I've decided, will have the colorwork pattern on it. The sole is going to be just plain stripes or maybe a checkerboard or possibly diamonds. Something, anyway, that I don't have to look at a fucking chart to knit.

There are updated pictures on my flickr.

We're still waiting on the alleged refund from the telco. They printed it on the bill and when I called today to inquire after how the refund process was progressing, they allowed as how the refund had been approved and that now we're just waiting for the telco to cut us a check. Uhm, yeah. So when can we have that? I was kind of wanting a new roof on my freaking house, you know...

They said they'd call us when it was mailed out. Yeah, right. That'll be Real Soon Now, I feel certain.

Made some progress on the HoHI this evening -- they go round and round really fast nowadays -- I'm about done with calf decreases and just have an inch and a half to go until the heel split. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

Sock update: 11 inches of socks. There are three inches to the inside ankle bone center. Three inches (vertical) is about one pattern repeat so that'll come out even as four pattern repeats. I currently have three full pattern repeats going down the calf. Yay me!

I was at my cousin Heather's yesterday for dinner, watched her baby-at-the-play video (v. cute), and ran around in the yard with Tess, who was naked. (Extra clarification: I was not naked. Tess being naked is not newsworthy most of the time, so I don't usually mention it.) Yesterday, though, in the late-afternoon sunlight, Tess was golden and the fallen walnut leaves were golden and everything was gold and brown and the whole thing looked like a damn Hallmark card, for values of Hallmark card that include a naked baby cuddling black walnuts and running from tree to tree like a slightly chunky nymph. It was like that dipshit Kincade was handling the lighting, for real.

I got a few rounds done on the HoHI last night, did some more this morning. It's looking good, socks are about 3.5" from the ankle split, which is the next exciting part. With any luck, I'll get to the heel pattern sometime this coming week. One can hope. I'm going to log some more time on them this afternoon, so keep your fingers crossed.

Also, on the pattern front, I made up minimalist charts for the patternwork, but I don't think that posting them is a good idea. The charts came out of actual books that I purchased -- they're copyrighted material -- and just because I'm using them off-road doesn't give me the right to make them public. There will be a write-up about the socks when they're done, though, discussing what I did and how I did it and all of that. (Like ya'll aren't already overdosed, I know.) I'll take pictures, even.

Sock progress report: 9 1/2" thereof. F^3 with Heather tomorrow in the early morning to see if we can beat most of the crowds. There may be fudge for sale. (F^3 is the Fall Foliage Festival, not the hentai title similarly abbreviated.) Then, we're going to make pureed squash (for pies). Feel the excitement. Thrilling, innit?

I painted the porch at 219 today. I also handed out my email address wrong because I'm stupid. I threw another couple of rounds onto the HoHI, which, following its debut on the flickr Socktoberfest group, is being well-reviewed by other sock-oriented people who, now, would like there to be a pattern, maybe.

A pattern? )

Anyone who is interested in seeing a-third-done HoHI worn on my somewhat furry leg can check out the pictures on my flickr for some slightly blurry artificial-light (it was dark out this morning when I took the shots) pictures of the sock in progress. The colors are better (I swear) than they appear in the pictures. No, I haven't shaved my legs lately. Wanna make something of it?

Lady, put the keyboard down. Nobody wants to hear more about your socks. )

First thing today, we took a field trip to Manns Choice to look at a building we might be financing. That was kind of fun -- it's a bank repo building, shot to hell, and suffering defiant tresspassers (probably junkies). Someone had the foresight to plumb it in pvc, which is not salable for drug money, or at least nowhere near as salable as copper, so it still has its plumbing. Anyway, we looked at it and were OK with financing (8.5%) the purchase of it, pending a clear title search and all. The realtor person wants "proof of financing" so we wrote the prospective buyer a letter. I don't reckon that real banks do much more than that and I am not handing out real money until there's been a title search. I am most certainly not handing over bank statements to "prove" that we have XX dollars in the bank. That's bullshit. Anyone with a photocopier can make it look like there are XX dollars in the bank, anyway.

What else did you do? )

Sock progress: 8 1/2" of sock. Yay. Today was a good sock day. Also, told you I'd get back into the swing of this sock knitting stuff. In the course of working on the HoHI, I've been rewatching Veronica Mars, mostly because I have the serious hots for Logan. He's so... snarky. I'm a sucker for good snark. The pretty doesn't hurt, either.

In other, non-sock news... )

Socktober. I put five rounds on the socks, about a quarter of an inch. The HoHI now are 7 3/4" long. I know that this does not sound like very much progress, but hey, I'm just getting back into the knitting thing again and I'm practicing up.

In other news, the telco sent us a phone bill showing the huge-ass credit on the "amount due". Hrm. Maybe they are for real with that. Allegedly the thing has been processed as of the 19th and they will be sending us a check. We'll see.
which_chick: (Default)
I picked up the HoHI again (Socktober starts tomorrow) and ground away another quarter inch on them. It's been a while since ya'll were exposed to the HoHI, so here's the recap...

Christ, first it was horses and now it's socks... never anything interesting. )

Went over to drop off left-behind dog food at Liss's. She fixed me dinner and got out Cuervo for me to beat up on. She's way less goofy than I thought she would be. Ash was there and said he'd do feet tomorrow, maybe, so I'll need to remember to pack my checkbook. Still no camera though now I have a UV filter for the lens and a hood for the lens. I wish the camera would get here.

Other news? )

I actually got a fair amount of stuff done today, if assorted handicrafts count as stuff...

Oh, like *that's* interesting -- not! )

The photography thing was again tonight. Unfortunately, it was dark and cold and blowing snow by the time I considered going. No. Not that interested, thanks. Instead, I stayed home and had two foods starting with A for dinner.

Two foods starting with A? You can't do better than that? )
