It was fine, which I am not saying in a mean or sarcastic way. Remember, we went in with lowered expectations and the actual target goals were totally unrelated to helping the horse be the best version of himself or Riding A Decent Test.

Thursday, after work, I decided on a not-exactly whim to locate and dig up my septic tank so that it could be pumped out. I planned for this to be a fairly substantial undertaking because I had no idea where the septic tank was. People are always surprised about this stuff. How can you NOT KNOW where your septic is? The answer is "Look, it was the seventies." Also, it's not like you get a manual when you buy a house. You get the house and after that, you're on your own. Everything is an adventure. So I set out into the yard and commenced to digging.

The horses are fine. They're still shedding out and with the optimism of spring I'm about convinced that I want to go to a (small, local) dressage show to feel bad about myself and my riding and my horse again. What fun!

I took the day off today to go play DLB. It doesn't take a whole day to play DLB but it does take a lot of the day and it's just easier to scrap the day than try to get to work AND play horse.

We have Fall DLB tomorrow AM. I feel like it's been a shit summer with the endless ninety degree temps and no rain for, like, July. I didn't get as much done with the Birb as I'd hoped to this year.

Flying changes? Lolnope.

Walk-canter-walk? Hah. Not in these parts... pardner.

ExpandSo it's a shitshow of failure? )

Because we're having a heat wave (90F+) this week, of course it's the first DLB outings of the season. I'm scheduled for 8 and 7 AM rides on Thursday and Friday, so maybe that will help us beat the worst of the heat.

Birb's fitness is not quite what I'd like it to be but once the hay got tall, we were limited to road work and weekly outings to N's new dressage ring (It's a rectangle. Feels weird to call it a ring. Dressage Court? Work Area?) so... meh. He's not a potato but he's also not at Peak Fighting Condition. It will be what it will be, I suppose. I could have done more and I'm certainly feeling my pre-regret, here.

First outings of the year are for DLB to assess where we are and what we've got to work with, so I'm prepping for slight disappointment on the "horse does not have an endless fountain of abs" front. On the plus side we've made some strides at steady gaits and moar forward in ring environments, so it's maybe not going to be an entire shitshow? I can hope, anyway.

Also, as I've discussed previously, DLB is a little confused about what I want out of dressage because I don't really love showing.

We are continuing our work on canter departures (from walk) and on canter-to-not-walk failures that are... getting less flail-y? I mean, they're still not canter-to-walk but they're getting nicer at canter-to-smallish-trot. I guess that's progress. Canter is also becoming more shape-able.

We shall see how the DLB goes, I guess.

Today I had a Horse Outing to friend N's new(ish) dressage arena. It's an outdoor with the confidence-building qualities of level, fenced, and nice footing mix of sand and stonedust. Bird (who does not like straight up stonedust by itself) really liked the footing.

His fat, middle-aged rider really appreciated the level and fenced qualities of the work area. (FMAR experiences some dread working canter efforts on grass fields where there can be random spooking on soft, wet grass. Like, horse could slip, fall over, crush rider's knee, etc. There are some fear/middle-age issues there.)

Truck ran well after the first ten minutes of assorted wetness in the fuel. I put in additives but it rained all last week, so... there was damp. When it's damp, the truckie has a hitch in his giddyup.

N's horse is really starting to come together in a visible way. Like, she's just so much more solid and confident, starting to carry herself fancy to where the llama of her youth rarely even makes an appearance. It's really nice to see them progress.

My horse has not been doing a whole lot lately because (a) craptacular air quality (b) brutal humidity and heat (c) pouring rain. So he's not as fit as I would like. And DLB clinic (Friday and Saturday) were in item (b) conditions so we didn't hammer much very hard. Lots of work in walk and trot, but on the plus side, very interesting work in walk and trot, so yay?

ExpandSome day I will discuss clinic efforts without a brief compliment towards how Truckie ran, but that day is not today. )

While doing roadwork with Trys the other day, we got to talking about Cardigan Lady again. Trys went with took me to go see the MW clinic that featured Cardigan Lady (I posted about it here) so she didn't need backstory on the whole thing and I could just jump right into Thoughts About Cardigan Lady. This is one of the most convenient things about friends, you can just skip the exposition and go right to the interesting stuff because they already have it by way of having been there the first go-round. For you, gentle reader, it might be worthwhile to go skim the linked entry if "Cardigan Lady" isn't ringing any bells for you at the moment (which I cannot abbreviate ATM because #reasons).

I probably should clean my tack more. It gets done a couple of times a year, which is not as often as the ponyclub world would have me do it, but it's also more often than a lot of folks I see out there playing horse. Anyway, one of the huge benefits of signing up for New Clinican Experiences is that it guilts me into extra tack cleaning.

ExpandDo I have to clean the tack if the horse is cruddy? )

For this Sunday, I have signed up for a dressage thing with a DIFFERENT DRESSAGE LADY at a DIFFERENT FACILITY because... I don't know. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Probably I'm just an idiot.

Where November Part 1 was warm enough to ride in a polo shirt, November Part 2 had me breaking out the wool sweater I made, my recently made mitts, the fuzzy-on-the-inside breeches, etc. I didn't have all my winter stuff (neck/face warmer, layered underarmor, etc. Also note to self, need to come up with helmet addition for warmer face-ears.) on but I had a lot of it.

It was pretty darned cold. I gave up on No-Heat November today, too, because it was a high of 40F. I cannot do no heat in those daytime temperatures. Got a fire going right now.

Anyway. ExpandRead more about dressage clinic? )

So we have DLB in November this year. Normally I would have passed on this opportunity, but given that the horse trailer is busy in the temperate seasons doing Ag Drone Work and given that we are Almost Ready For Flying Changes, I figured we might benefit with some tips for independent study over the winter months. Also the economy is in the shitter so toss a coin to your Witcher.

I mentioned my strugglebus issues with counter canter re: its general terrifyingness to my instructor last night. She did the knowing nod of commiseration during the "DANGER, horse will fall over!" explanation of why I feel it's terrifying. (4H leaders from the early 1980's in Greater Rednecklandia weren't all that wrong about don't canter on the wrong lead for their redneck beginner riders on poorly-muscled and unbalanced backyard ponies. I am not blaming them for what, at the time, was valid and sensible advice.)

It is hot. It is hot every day after work, so hot that my light-colored horse stands in the shade sweating. Neither he nor I want to go for a ride at 4:30 in the afternoon. I barely want to go for a ride at 6:30 or 7:00 in the evening. It is just... hot and sticky and I get that we're in August. I do understand that. But wow, I could really use a break from the weather.

So pony lessons are on Thursdays most of the time. I usually ride a lesson-barn horse and most of the time (but not always) that's the reasonably sensible and honest Mystic, a black hony of about 20 years old with not-a-lotta legit training. When she arrived, she rode like something that had been used for unskilled gaming efforts, like barrels, poles, timed events but not the people that win. The people that do-not-win. But she's been at lesson barn for a couple of years and she's doing better and kinda has some skills these days. I like Mystic pretty well. She's all right and I kinda know how she is.

But today was a Tara day. Tara is instructor's aged horse who is working on... whatever you do that you need to be halfpassing. Looks like (I just did a cursory glance through the tests) that's third level. (I do not have a lot of time for levels. I want to go sideways and basically I only give as much of a shit about the other stuff as it relates to better-going-sideways.) Anyway, I think she shows Tara 2nd level but they are (with DLB) working on halfpassing and it's... going, kinda.

ExpandSo how did that go? )
which_chick: (Default)
At lesson last night (lesson is Thursday, which is also Bird's Day Off) we worked on leg yields as a mechanism for improving canter departures and canters in general. And let me tell you, it was sort of fun.

ExpandProbably this is not fun or interesting for non-horse-people... )
which_chick: (Default)
So because my horse is a snowflake and he mostly works on grass (and is barefoot) and the ring at Lesson Barn is stone dust that regrettably compacts to cement when it rains and my horse does not care for that, I booted his fronts for DLB round 3 in the hopes that this would improve his feelings about working in the ring.

ExpandHow'd that go? )
