As you know, Bob, I put my mare Nick down at the end of September last year. We were at the Ebensburg Potato Festival and Trys got a call from the vet's office regarding the bloodwork for Nick. The vet said the bloodwork was strongly indicative of cancer, so we put the mare down the next day.

So yesterday I had my mare of sixteen years put down. It was very sad, but she had cancer and wasn’t going to get any better, only worse. And in her kitchen, the-morning-of (horse deaths are frequently scheduled because of logistics and backhoes and stuff), my dear friend asked me when we got to the good times. (Y’know, because it sucks to put your horse of sixteen years down and I’m miserably unhappy and snotting all over her kitchen and clearly this is not the good times that she signed up for.)

We sent off new, improved bloodwork on my mare Nick. Vet said the numbers were consistent with cancer and wondered aloud how the mare was still standing. She’s not anymore.

Goodbye, Beautiful.

I still have a mare (barely) and a baby horse. Baby horse at 2.5 months is doing pretty well eating the milk kibble, is a champ at alfalfa and hay. Mare is not doing well eating much of anything. Vet is confounded, has offered a free post-mortem so we can find out what was actually wrong with her after the fact. We’re not to post-mortem yet but it won’t be long.
