Two days of DLB clinic, hot and humid.
Jul. 8th, 2023 01:52 pmMy horse has not been doing a whole lot lately because (a) craptacular air quality (b) brutal humidity and heat (c) pouring rain. So he's not as fit as I would like. And DLB clinic (Friday and Saturday) were in item (b) conditions so we didn't hammer much very hard. Lots of work in walk and trot, but on the plus side, very interesting work in walk and trot, so yay?
Truck ran well. (Truckie is the the truck's name. The truck is, contrary to all expectations and against my friend Trys's views on the subject, a he. I wish she would quit misgendering my truck. Anyway.) Truckie has been doing quite well since I started putting the fuel additives in with every tank, so yeah, gonna keep doing that.
Bird is getting used to the new trailer, still gives it the side eye but then hops right on. I like how it pulls, too, and the LED lights continue to function. Yay.
At clinic, we did circles. Circles are hard. I should do more with circles.
We did shoulder-in on the circle, which is hard. Like, brain-meltingly hard for me. But by the end I kinda got what we were going for. This was an exercise I've ridden before for DLB but as yet it doesn't feel like it's getting much easier. I still need reminders and coaching to get it going nicely. More work needed.
We did "come down center line and leg yield to left. And gradually change bend so that you're then half passing to left." This was super hard, the change in bend is really really tough to get going without losing all the quality of gait you have going on. But it's also something I can take home and play with myself. Like, this is a "room to grow with us" exercise and one that I can totally work at home.
And that was it. It doesn't sound like much for two days of clinic stuff, but a lot of the emphasis was on more subtle and better balance and smaller, more granular adjustments. DLB was kind of encouraging about our ability to do more subtle and precise work, so that was nice.
I don't handle the heat as well as I used to, so on Friday I was... over heated. I had been drinking water throughout the day and staying in the shade and wearing my floppy hat and yet still I came home and puked for three hours. *sigh* Dry heaves, every half hour or so, puking up stomach acid after the first two or so pukes. It was horrible. I do not love puke mode.
I didn't have any dinner Friday night because I didn't want to see it twice and I couldn't drink anything because once I'm in... puke mode, that's just what it's gonna be and I didn't figure liquids would stay down either. Nothing for it but sleeping it off and hoping the morrow is an improvement. (I have had an endoscopy for ulcers and shit. There are no ulcers. No idea why there is a puke mode. No idea. Happens without warning sometimes, other times I have some idea what brought it on. It's about once or twice in a two month period and I am trying to track what's going on to get a better handle on it. I didn't eat anything suspect at all and this was six hours after eating anyway. I think it was heat related? That seems to be one of the triggers for puke mode. I did not used to have a puke mode, this is new-ish in the last couple of years. Not lovin' it.)
Got a decent night's sleep, though, and woke up A LOT better. Made black raspberry hand pies (went for half-moons because that was easiest, used food scale for portioning dough, they came out nice but I don't have a picture.) for my covered dish. Arrived on time, much perkier for 9 AM ride time (prior day was 11 AM which is ... getting hot) and everything went well. I also left early enough to be out of the sun and in front of a fan by noon.
I still have to put things away (except the horse. The horse is put away already) but I'm going to save that for this evening around 7 PM when it starts to cool off. Right now I'm in the house, in front of a fan, working on my laundry and my Spanish.
