What an odd little movie...

which_chickFor reasons, I spend my Friday evening watching Repo! The Genetic Opera, which is an odd little movie with possibly the most fucking compelling thirty year old jobless asshole hanging around the high school hangouts and hitting on sixteen year old girls character I have ever seen. Let me be clear, I do not know anything at all about the guy who sings Zydrate Anatomy, never met the man, do not know shit about him.
The character's vibe is, 100%, thirty year old jobless asshole hanging around the high school hangouts and hitting on sixteen year old girls. If that's an act, it's fucking pitch perfect. The smug and superior little smirks and the scenery chewing and all of it, holy shit, the way he moves. Not just in the zydrate song, but the entire character, every damn time he's on screen, every fucking second of it. He could also be dude who thinks he's too good for community theater and yet is doing community theater. That kind of dude.
Also, I think that other dude is from BtVS and probably the lady whose face falls off is Paris Hilton? (It took me half the fucking movie to figure out that the Repo Man was Giles from Buffy. I do not see faces well.)
Anyway. This is not a good movie. It is seriously not a good movie. It is cartoonishly bad, so very much so that it's gotta be intentional. And if you do a thing with sincere intention and enthusiasm... enough, it kind of comes out the other side of bad. It doesn't become good like a velveteen rabbit becomes real (there is no perspective from which this is or could be a good movie) but even a pile of shit sometimes glistens in the sun. This is kind of like that or maybe it's a rainbow sheen on top of sewage.
If you'd like a bad movie about bad people in kind of an opera format which also has comic book exposition and some questionable lighting choices... it's not a bad use of your hour and a half especially if you don't have to pay out actual money to see it. *ahem* Avast me hearties.

There's a song cut from the movie ("Needle Through A Bug") that's a duet between Graverobber and Shiloh, and it cranks that "creeping on the high schoolers" vibe up to 11. (I actually love the song, but that vibe is EXPLICITLY ALL OVER IT.)
Apparently my younger sibling was friends with his cousin? I think? back on Neopets, a million years ago, lol.
It is indeed Giles from Buffy. And Ogre from Skinny Puppy. And also yes, Paris Hilton. Also Sarah Brightman most famed for being the lead in Phantom of the Opera (on stage, not the film), I think?
From what I've heard - which is admittedly fairly little - Terrance Zdunich actually seems to be a fairly cool guy, that a lot of people really enjoy working with? But man, that vibe do be there.
A lot of the same people made the movie The Devil's Carnival which I also find oddly charming, but is also very not good, and feels far more like community theater. He plays Satan in that. That one got a sequel called Alleluia, which had more amazingly bizarre casting.
I did NOT pay to see either of those, and feel I got my money's worth, haha.
