Today I improved the laundry room window. It's had a hole in the lower pane since I moved in. (Not a big hole, a bb-gun pellet sized hole.)

In the twenty years I've been here, I haven't repaired the window because it's a dumb-ass crank-to-open thing that tilts out at a slant. I do not know how to put panes in that style of window. Also, it doesn't crank-to-open and is stuck in the shut position. It isn't exactly WELL shut, just mostly. In truth, it leaks like hell and there is no storm window and I've had it duct-taped around the edges for the last twenty years. Because I am classy like that, is why.

Working on it involves crawling over the dryer and standing on a five-gallon bucket while reaching across the water heater to the window. That may also have had something to do with my lack o' enthusiasm for fixing this issue.

What I did was basically made a storm window INSIDE the house, using the window opening and strips to frame up where I put a piece of glass. It is not lovely, but it's also in the laundry, behind the water heater.

Steps for making-the-situation-better...

1. Measure the opening at least four times each way. Be sure to compare sides and middles of opening. Select the dimensions that will let a piece of glass fit in there. Note that glass does not stretch or bend. Trips over the dryer: 2 (one in, one out)

2. Measure again. Double-check because the hardware is fifteen miles away and the road is currently 4wd-quality due to icing. Trips over the dryer: 2 (one in, one out)

3. Go to hardware, buy glass. Get strips of 3/4" pine ripped from a 1-by. You will need about 6 pieces. Trips over the dryer: none. :)

4. Round up the miter saw, nail set, pliers, pry bar, screwdrivers, nails, hammer, etc. And a tape measure. Trips over the dryer: none. :)

5. Remove crank-handle assembly from window. Trips over the dryer: 4. (I didn't take a pry bar the first time.)

6. Attach two strips to the top and bottom of the window opening, slightly back from the actual window. Nail these in. Trips over the dryer: 4. (Nail set. You need the nail set.)

7. Check to see if the piece of glass fits. Trips over the dryer: 2.

8. Measure for the second set of strips. Cut them. Install them. Trips over the dryer: 4. I am not good at planning my life.

9. Caulk corners for better weathertightening. Trips over the dryer: 2.

I could paint this but I am not feeling it right now because I have crawled over the dryer a sufficient number of times today.

Other home improvements are in the offing. I have New Flooring for my bathroom. It's currently sitting in the living room because I need to level the floor with floor leveling and luan, which I also have in my living room. I have plans to tile the bathroom tub surround. I have plans to build a wall extension in the kitchen. So many plans. But today I fixed the stupid window problem in the laundry.
