I am currently thawing a piece of pork loin for use with Korean Death Spices, something I point out for readers who may have received similar products from Ben at the party welcoming him home from Good Korea. [livejournal.com profile] ladyivy, I am looking at you. The Korean Death Spices have four English words, three of them useful, on the lable. The useful words are Pork Kalbi Marinade. The not-useful word is "Other" and it's near the recycling symbol which is in universal recycling symbol language (three arrows going clockwise in a triangle-ish shape).

Anyway, I shook and opened the the KDS. I smelled the stuff and it didn't smell too dangerous so then I stuck a finger in to taste it and determined that there wasn't much of the D in there. It's a nice, soy-ish marinade with some ginger and garlic and maybe some sesame oil and not a whole lot of heat to my way of thinking. There is a picture of apples on the lable, but since there is a picture of fried chicken on the Crisco can and Crisco contains absolutely no fried chicken, I didn't take that as a promise. There's some heat there, a lingering sort of warm-mouth thing, but it's not deadly.

I'm sorry for everyone who clicked to read about how flames came out of my mouth and stuff but this is a reality-based LJ and I don't make up things very damned often. It's a nice sauce. It should go quite well with pork. If I decide to perk it up with some red pepper, well, that's my business, innit?

Now, while the pork loin thaws, I'm going to crank up the HnG and see if I can figure out how many stitches out of 88 should go on the heel-flap needle if I'm supposed to be using "half" for the heel flap but there's a column of single purl stitches down the back of the heel and if I did "half" then the purl stitch would not be centered. It does not matter that eagles would be unable to see this at the stitches per inch I'm using on the dark, low-contrast yarn I am using. I would know it was like that and that knowing would bother me. If you feel that this seems like a really nonfunctional way to go through life, perhaps you should be aware that the mechanism responsible is the same mechanism that means I don't steal or cheat or kill even when I could get away with it. (Probably we should all think a happy thought for the Even if other people can't tell the difference, having things be right is still important mechanism because it keeps me from being a highly successful criminal sociopath.)

I believe we're going to opt for "43" being "half" of 88, but I'll feel better making that decision with the soothing clicking of go stones in the background. I wish I had an invisible ghost to follow me around and teach me a no-heavy-lifting way of earning a living that I just happened to be preternaturally good at.

Damn, I was looking forward to flames.

I think I wish I knew the joy/angst of knitting.

It's not hard to learn. I taught myself via a free (you may have noticed an ongoing free theme around here) internet tutorial:

http://www.wonderful-things.com/newknit.htm (http://www.wonderful-things.com/newknit.htm)

You also don't need to spend a fortune to get started. You can go to WalMart or similar and pick up a pair of size 7 straight needles and a thing of basic yarn. These items (at WalMart) will be in the back near the fabric and crafty stuff. Get sweater-sized yarn, not super fine, plain without any lumpy bits or strings hanging off of it. Sit down with the sticks and the yarn and follow the directions on the website. If that doesn't work, you can ask someone who knows to show you how in person.

As mentioned in the post above, I currently knit non-patterned stuff while watching subtitled anime. Patterned stuff -- it depends on how complicated the pattern is, whether or not I can watch TV while doing it.

Well, you may not have gotten flames, but I have the BEEF Korean Death Spice so I am withholding judgement until after I dig out the london broil I know I have somewhere in the freezer and try it for myself. This will probably occur within the next week or so.

Ben apparently deliberately got three different types of KDS - you got the pork, I got the beef for non-frying use, and Donna got the beef for frying with sesame oil use.

I will actually do a post to my LJ letting you know the outcome when I do try it out.

Not only did I pimp up the KDS with some red pepper, I'd like to mention that my damn cat licked off the plate when I was done. My *cat* ate the KDS with enthusiasm. It is not very deadly... but it was quite good.
