Trys, one of my horse partners-in-crime, has been on me again about jousting. Now, we've discussed jousting before but I didn't HAVE A PLAN for how to make that work with our setup and ponies and stuff. So, it died in the womb several times before this time. But over the weekend Trys was "Hey, we should do jousting" and unlike all the times before this time, suddenly I had a plan.

First off, fuck off Nancy Negative. That kind of attitude, nobody would ever have any fun at all. Second, we are not going to be jousting AT EACH OTHER, we're going to be tilting at rings. No armor required! Safer! Probably still fun at walk-n-trot speeds!

Whut?

I have devised an ingenious method of making rings to tilt at and ring holders that will work over and over, are not dangerous, are easy to reset, and cost me ZERO DOLLARS. By the power of Grayskull PVC...

I'm going to be using our existing jump standards, which will be slightly modified, so that I don't have to build something else. I've made 8 holders and 8 rings, which will make 4 "high" obstacles and 4 "low" obstacles because we have tall and short jump standards to attach them to.

Here's the setup:

The black semicircle is half of a 3" piece of PVC, about two inches long. It has a hole drilled in it (shown in red) where it will be screwed to the side of the jump standard.

The blue circle is one of the rings which we will be picking up with our lance. It's made out of an inch and a half thick (give or take) slice of 2" diameter PVC pipe.

The rings just sit in the cups and you thread them onto the lance as you go by. Resetting the obstacle is a matter of riding around again and putting the rings back in the holders, which is not difficult. The rings are thick enough to 'stand up' easily and the cups are big enough to hold them.

Here's what it looks like installed:

The lance is made of 3/4" diameter pex pipe. It's a fairly soft, non-shattery plastic and thus will not kill anyone if it is dropped or whatever. It's not 100% straight, but... it will work and is safe.

Skill level adjustments!!

1. I'm going to put tape on the lance indicating where it may be held. Persons with more riding skill have to hold the lance further back. Persons with less riding skill can choke up a bit on the lance for better control.

2. If we get good at the 2" rings, I can make 1.5" rings or even 1.25" rings out of other pipe. The same holders will still work for the rings but the difficulty will be more.

Do the horses have any idea at all about how to do this? No. No, they do not. It's going to be amazeballs.
