Took Bird up to the lesson barn (yay Half Day Of Work, sometimes self-employment has its merits) for saddle fitter and lesson.

He moved up a tree size (the saddle has an adjustable tree) but otherwise was OK on the saddle fit front.

Lesson was a non-stress jumping session. We set up the newly-painted jumps as nonthreatening crossrails and Bird trotted over all of them. And then we added fill, slowly. He refused about three times on first-efforts but then got braver even though the jumps got higher and scarier. (They never exceeded 2' or 2'3" but there was a lot more fill added, and different kinds of fill.) We didn't hammer him too hard because he's not especially fit and it's early in the season. He'll get better as the season goes on but this was a quite good effort for early on.

Go Bird!

Saddle fitter says that overall he's muscling up nicely but he's slightly hollow behind his right shoulder blade. It's an unevenness in his overall balance, so I have to look for stuff to help him with that. (Also I should look to myself regarding my overall balance so that I can be more even and help that way, too.)
