which_chickSo there’s this article in the WaPo about child marriage.
It’s by Terrence McCoy and it’s here. The article discusses Mrs. Maria (Vargas) Manning, her husband Phil Manning, and Maria’s mother Michelle (Vargas) Hockenberry.
Now, this is all well and good, except, unlike MOST of the people written about in the WaPo, I know Michelle (Vargas) Hockenberry personally because she rented an apartment off of me for six months when her kids were small.
She was not a good tenant. She was a bad tenant. Many, many cars pulled into the driveway, person jumped out, ran up the back stairs, knocked on the door, ran down the back stairs, hopped back in the car and pulled out the driveway – less than two minutes per “visit”. She got a lot of visitors when school let out, a steady stream of them. I don’t KNOW FOR A FACT that she was selling drugs out of my apartment, but if I was a betting woman, that’s how I’d bet.
Michelle bragged to me, at the time, that she paid her babysitter “in heroin”, a statement so bizarre that it’s remained in my memory for the last seven years. Who pays a babysitter in heroin? Who wants a heroin addict watching their small kids? What the fucking fuck, Michelle?
Michelle had Children and Youth called on her repeatedly due to nonexistent or harmful parenting. I suppose they did the best they could.
Michelle and her boyfriend at the time stole the copper pipes out of the basement heating system and (presumably) sold them for drug money.
ANYWAY. The article is all “How can Maria (the daughter) get married at 16?” and also “What kind of mother would sign off on that shit?”
Well, Maria has a two year old son, so getting married at 16 is not even close to the first thing that has gone wrong.
And honestly if Michelle were my mom, I’d marry the first guy I could find so that I could get the hell out from under her roof.
As for what kind of parenting has been going on? None. No parenting. Not once, not ever.
