which_chickStill playing lathe. And horse.
Horse -- took Nick for a spin today after a week off. Took along Mia (a different Mia from last year, but again on Mariah) because she'd weeded for an hour in order to be able to play horse. Any kid who will weed steadily for an hour in 80/80 weather in order to play horse deserves to play horse. Two rows of the sweet corn look fantastic and if I can keep her going in this direction, the rest of the garden is going to look awesome in short order.
Lathe -- I have bitten the bullet and started on the stool project. I know, bowls, but I still kinda suck at using the tools and I want to get better. I also want to make actual things. I think I can learn to make actual things and get better at using the tools at the same time.
Hence, the stool. Stools have lots of skills needed for success but they're not hugely complicated. Some obvious skills -- making multiple copies of the same thing, figuring out and drilling repeatable angles for the legs, faceplate turning and spindle turning, selecting quarter-sawn wood for the seat and making it joined together to be big enough for a seat (so routing and gluing and clamping and so forth) plus also there's sanding and finishing, etc. There is a lot to learn and a stool is a project that uses lots of skills (or helpfully illustrates how lacking the skills are as yet). Oh, and I'm making it out of relatively green ash wood because I have that and it's free.
