I took the ungratedfuls out for a spin today.

It went... okay. I did pictures with Te and Olivia. Te was not horribly thrilled, but she went along with it. If only she were more photogenic...

After that I took Te for the usual spin, with remedial hill work. She spooked in place, but big, coming up out of the hollow. I was in the up part of posting and wound up ass out of the saddle and laying over her neck. I didn't come off, but it was not pretty. Te stood still after her spook-stop and let me get my shit back together. I didn't see what she spooked at, but she went on calmly afterward.

Subsequent to that, I took Peake out. She was her usual forward self, but no worse than usual until she was coming up out of the hollow at approximately the same place that Te lost it, whereupon she spooked bigger than Te had. It took me by surprise (again) and I almost got her stopped but then was so out of position that I hit the dirt (fairly gently and reins still in hand). Peake stopped at the end of the reins and waited for me to get back up and back on her, which I did.

This time I did see what occasioned the spook -- a great big huge turkey buzzard (they eat dead things) that was lurking in the hollow and nomming on something dead down there had flown up right in front of us. Quite the suprise. Anyway, that was my day with the ungratefuls.

dead things you can't see certainly can cause some spectacular spooks.
