I'm getting back on the bandwagon of sensible eating. I didn't exactly fall off, but I was edging towards the tailgate with an eye towards hitting the ground running, probably with a potato in one hand and a loaf of bread in the other. It's fall, though, and the message I'm getting, along with shorter days, is that I should Put On Weight -- The Sun Is Dying And The Lean Times Will Soon Be Upon Us! Yeah, right. Lizard brain is not up to speed on modern conveniences like The Freezer and The Grocery Store. (Knowing that I am spoken to in an All Caps voiced lizard brain probably explains a lot of me to the rest of you, too.)

So it is back with the measured portions for food. I am also making with the exercise, though currently that is woodpile related rather than running-related. It needs to be running-related but damn it, woodpile. I'm working on it. Also, major horse thing this weekend so not really in running mode yet.

Sensible eating, in my world, consists largely of two things.

Thing One: portion control. It's all about the portions. Serving sizes are serving sizes and one serving is all you get and regularly-scheduled meals are the only meals that exist. I totally freaking hate portion control. No matter how much I hate it and wish it would go away, though, it continues to work well. If I ignore portion control, I will not-lose-weight no matter what I eat. I'm not looking forward to aging, menopause, and becoming elderly because (judging from my grandma and my friend La's grandma) very old ladies don't really have to eat to maintain their weight. When I was in eighth grade, I could eat anything I wanted, as much as I wanted, as often as I wanted. It was awesome. In college, I could do nearly that well. In my later twenties, well, no. Had to kind of pay attention. In my thirties, I had to pay more attention to food (and failed to do so) and now that I'm forty, I really do need to pay attention to every single meal, every single bite, every snack/beverage. And apparently this gets worse -- take it seriously or you will get fat, fat, fat. So. Portion control.

Portions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are measured with a measuring cup. (I pack lunches for work.) The portions are all that there are. No seconds. No snacks. Stupid portion control.

Thing Two: exercise. Getting regular exercise is part of weight loss. It's not very easy to lose weight if you are exercising and eating properly. It's damn hard if you're just eating properly (less. Most of "properly" is really "less". They SAY properly but mostly they just mean less.) and there's no point making it harder than it already is. Exercise, then. Vigorous, sweat-producing exercise about an hour a day of the shit.

I hate this. I hate it less than being fat, but not a whole lot less. :( Happy fall, ya'll.
