Jul. 12th, 2009 11:06 pmWe got the new jump standards and six additional poles painted today after lesson. Kat (lesson lady) is departing after August in order to return to college. Not sure what we're doing for Sunday lesson at that point -- Trys is looking into some leads for us on that front. I had a decent ride on Hoshi -- it takes his brain a while to come online, which is kind of annoying, but we're doing somewhat better at getting on the same page. I told Kat that it'd be okay if she stuck me on something different if she wanted. I don't really care what I ride at lesson.
At home, I took the large standards (they're like 2'6") up over the hill so that I'd have a set of small and a set of large. I put the large standards into a crossrail setup behind the same jump (vertical) I'd had there the other day (Friday -- it poured rain on Saturday) and went to send Goof over it. That didn't go particularly well. First, new jump standards were scary. She swerved out to the right. I tried again. She mashed the first fence, swerved out on the second fence. I tried again. She mashed the first fence and then jumped (from a standstill) the second but it was not at all pretty.
Fine. I took away the first fence. I tried again. At least we got an approach to the jump that (while wobbly) got us over the jump with no loss of forward motion. Nick overjumped massively, which I took as an indicator that she was kind of pressed. I repeated the single jump twice more until she improved enough to be more-or-less OK with the jump. At that point, I set up a low cross-rail 2 strides (24 feet) in front of the existing fence. Nick jumped that twice, the second time better than the first, and I called it a night. Small bites -- so I'll keep that obstacle again for the next go 'round tomorrow night.
