Apr. 13th, 2008 08:51 amThe weather yesterday was unexpectedly gorgeous. We were supposed to have grey/wet and forty degrees and instead we got sixties with bright, bright sunshine. Yay. There was some wind, but it wasn't enough to ruin the bright, bright sunshine.
Brother the younger was visiting, so I killed the fatted bacon in his honor. We walked around the lake with the kids, who had a good time. Duncan, in particular, had a great walk. He and I did our speed walking and running and trotting and stuff ahead of the 'rents and the sibling so that we got back to the Big House six minutes (he is learning subtraction) before they did.
We played some pool -- as mentioned here previously, Duncan plays by rolling the cue ball at his shots. I use a cue like normal pool players (only shittier -- I am not a good pool player) and we play slop-shot eight ball. It's fun. It's fun when I play his dad, too, which I did after he went down for the night. :)
I played pony in the middle of the day. I got some time in on Lutely, who picked up both leads in a resentful and unhappy fashion. She *did* take them, though, which is a start. She's also getting better at her trot speeds.
I also worked with Callisto. We reviewed saddle blanket, saddle, work in both directions at the jog, play farrier game, and putting weight in stirrups. Weight in stirrups had been new last week. Now, it's old news.
Since I had a helper (Trys), I actually climbed aboard, for values of "aboard" that include me laying across the saddle like the injured-and-dying member of the posse after the first encounter with the outlaws. Reason for this is that it's a good way for the horse to see you on both sides at once and get used to weight on her back *while* making it so that you can slide off immediately if there is any trouble. There was no trouble. I did both sides, more than once each, and she was fine for that -- a little worried at first, but not miserable or sudden. She got to where she was almost OK by the end of the session, which I thought was good. Trysta led me like ten feet each time, which Callisto did at a not-leaping flat footed walk. We're going to do this another time or two (until she relaxes about it) and then it'll be time to get aboard like a real person.
April 27, I'll be at a Hunter-Jumper show near Hershey with Trysta. Her pony lady is taking a trailer of kids and horses up to the thing (it's an Arab-Morgan rated show) and Trysta wants to go see. I want to go see, too, and I'm taking the camera for pictures which will be fun. (Recipients will not complain as pictures are, y'know, free. Plus, it's good practice.)
I talked on the phone to Tash, who offered advice re: teaching ponies to drive (And offered gear, which I might take her up on once I get at least ground driving underway on Lutely. Hell, Callisto, too, while I'm at it.) and clarified why Landy had borrowed the bucket and I invited her to the Hunter-Jumper show, the which she said she might be interested in attending. I think it'd be a nice outing, so maybe she can make that work with her schedule.
Joe did cookout for dinner, which was tasty, and we watched the first segment of Tin Man, a "sci fi" remake of The Wizard of Oz. The movie was less than successful on many counts. All of them, actually. Dorothy (reimagined as "DG") is the sister of the evil Azblablah, who rules the O - Z (which I kept thinking of as the O-C) and... the highlight (of the part we watched) was when the evil Azblahblah made flying monkeys come out of her tits.
(Not making this up. Not. I know it *sounds* like I'm making it up, but I am not. Yes, I had been drinking. That does not mean that I hallucinated the flying monkeys springing forth from Azblahblah's tits. Three woodchuck ciders is not enough to do that to me.)
I am in no particular hurry to watch the rest of the movie. The first segment was enough to curdle my desire to see any more of it.
Today, it's cold and grey and probably actually the forties. I haven't been out yet. Trys wants to deworm and delouse, so I'm going to try to get over there and help with that. I really don't think I need a shower if I'm going to go stand in muck and deworm/delouse horses.

Not like they're doing with The Day The Earth Stood Still or anything.
It's just a horrible perversion of a story, similar to what Heinlein did in Number of the Beast. Was it Number of the Beast where they went to Oz? I fear my mind is horribly scarred and can't remember. Dont WANT to remember.
