Update on the lard pie crust: It are da nummy. We have a new standard in pie crusts. As it passed the pre-baking tests, it passed the post-baking tests. It does not brown excessively. It makes with the flaky. (Boy, does it ever!) It does not taste like pig. Huzzah.

Attention brick-and-mortar bookstores what are whining about how people meet their bookly needs at fucking amazon.com!

Today I got in my car and drive my ass to Altoona to pick up the second and third books in the Elf Porn series. They're lowbrow genre fiction, so I figured the Waldenbooks at the mall in Altoona would have 'em... particularly since they had the first one a week and a half ago. Seeing as how I'm working right up into high dudgeon on an LJ post, the more astute readers have already figured out that ye olde Waldenbooks DID NOT HAVE the fucking Elf Porn books that I drove up to Altoona to purchase. Stupid Waldenbooks. Today was another nail in your coffin, boyo.

I dunno about other people, but I turn to amazon.com to meet my bookly needs because amazon.com meets said needs. If I shop at amazon.com, I don't have to drive to fucking Altoona so that I can not-buy the lowbrow genre fiction that I'd been aiming to buy. If amazon.com doesn't have what I want, I can find that out while sitting on my fat fucking ass in front of my laptop.

part of Amazon.com's charm is that they have access to other used book stores, and so forth, so dn't have to be careful of their stock of older books. Bookstores like Waldenbooks are charged taxes for their stock.

yeah. i think this tax was possibly the most destructive side-effect of reagan's legacy, particularly as it concerns non-bestseller books. it's largely responsible for the absurdly high cost of academic texts, and for the overly rapid out-of-printing and remaindering of books that appeal to a more select audience (and which is why the horror section is about 90% filled with 5 authors (king, hamilton of elf-porn fame, straub, barker and rice), and why you can't find a book by caitlin kiernan to save your life). its also why only a handful of academic texts are ever in print for more than one year - its cheaper to destroy the stock and reprint it if there's enough demand.

it also makes stocking up for xmas very challenging for retailers, as they have to balance getting everything they need to maximize sales with minimizing the amount of left-over stock by jan 1...

Boiled in Lead was a band I learned about during my broadening trip to Amsterdam. In the club where we went to see Gogol Bordello, they spun records before the opening act. One of the songs they played was Rasputin, by the aforementioned. Trys said, "That's a great song! I must have it!!" (This, from someone who doesn't really know who Rasputin was. She's young yet. We discussed the historical bits later. I'm *such* a fucking hit at parties.) Since Trysta is way cuter than I am, I said, "Go ask the DJ for the name of the song and the name of the band that sings it." To ensure that she got it right, I pulled out a pen and some paper from my impressive bag of holding and handed them to her.

When I got back to the states, I turned to amazon.com and hooked us up with a Greatest Hits (Alloy) CD of these people. (As long as the Greatest Hits album contains the track I want, I generally get that for bands of which I know nothing.) I've been enjoying it since.

I believe that Alloy is the only album of theirs available in the retail market (i.e. other than ordering from their record label). I have a couple BiL songs up online which you may enjoy:
