Jul. 8th, 2006 06:26 pmI did some more practice gybes this afternoon in a light breeze. It went well and I got to perform a capsize drill because my gybe technique involves hooking the mainsheet over the transom. (This flips the boat instantly if there's any breeze at all.) I have now righted the boat twice from a capsize without help. Yay! There was also so little wind that for part of the afternoon, I stood up and sailed while standing. (There really was no wind at all. The boat was ghosting along under barely enough wind to keep the sail from drooping.) Tomorrow if there's still no wind, I'll see if I can stand on the deck instead of in the footwell. (Is the mainsheet long enough for that? Hell yeah, it's forty-six feet long. The boat is fourteen feet long. I have acres of mainsheet to spare. The tiller also has rockin' tiller extension goodness such that I can stand up on the boat -- or lean out flat to try to keep the damn thing level -- and still steer.) No, I am NOT too old for exciting boat tricks. It's just water. I'm wearing a lifejacket. What could possibly go wrong?
Now I'm going to the movies.
