Today we play Ghana in the World Cup. I think that Ghana will probably beat us. *sigh* Ghana is a not-huge African nation (slightly smaller than Oregon, says the CIA factbook), located on the coast of the underside of the big left-hand ("western" if you want to get technical about it) bump of Africa, between Togo and Cote d'Ivoire. GDP per capita in Ghana is $2500 and 31.4% of the population lives below the poverty line. For comparison, the United States is the size of the United States (which includes Oregon as well as forty-nine other states, some of which are bigger than Oregon). Our per-capita GDP is $41,800 and 12% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Clearly, we do not make enough of an effort at football. On the bright side, The Netherlands (Hup Holland!) is progressing to the next round, as are Argentina, Brasil (has the delightful and amazing Ronaldinho who handles the ball like a god and personifies the Nike dictum Joga Bonito. Yeah, but they have a guy on their team who apparently plays for a Tel Aviv municipal team when he's not back playing for his country of origin, who's been pissing off all the right people (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_sports/view/214490/1/.html) by waving an Israeli flag on the field. That just warms the cockles of my tiny, gnarled and knotty neo-con heart.
