This just in: the ruby-throated hummingbirds are back from wherever they spend the winter. Mexico, I think. (Google says so, too) This, I know because I was sitting here with the front door propped open and a hummingbird flew into my house. (They do that pretty much all summer long.) This one was brighter than most and it flew back out without requiring my intervention. Thought you'd like to know.

Also, chopsticks are the perfect utensils for eating olives out of the jar. No drippy olives. No wet fingers. No mess. Can reach through the juice to get to the last few olives. No additional holes in the olives. (This is, for some reason, important to me.)

Man, I love hummingbirds! The san diego zoo, I think, has this big aviary full of hummingbirds. My brother thought it was scary but it was totally awesome.
Do you have a feeder, or are they just drawn to your secret elven princess vibes? I see hummingbirds here pretty frequently, but I've never seen any fly indoors. I think. There was one incident with a bird in high school, but I don't htink it was a hummingbird.

If I have secret elven princess vibes, they're so damn secret that neither I nor anyone who has ever met me has ever noticed 'em.

I don't have a feeder or anything, but I grow a campsis vine (has big reddish-orange trumpet-shaped flowers that appeal to hummingbirds) and a red trumpet honeysuckle (small reddish-orange tube-shaped flowers that appeal...) on the chimney. However, neither of those has flowers at the moment. Perhaps the hummingbirds are flying into my (darker than outside) house for a brief period of time to riff on some philosophy thing that I unfortunately have an incomplete enough recall of to turn up on google. Sorry. It would have been quite a nice joke if I'd been able to dredge up the reference.

I was so confused I laughed, so apparently it works this way as well!

Fortunately, you have someone around who reads Anglo-Saxon history for fun.

The Conversion of King Edwin (http://www.catholic-forum.com/Saints/sainte10.htm) by the Venerable Bede:
Another of the king's chief men, approving of Coifi's words and exhortations, presently added: "The present life of man, O king, seems to me, in comparison with that time which is unknown to us, like to the swift flight of a sparrow through the room wherein you sit at supper in winter amid your officers and ministers, with a good fire in the midst, whilst the storms of rain and snow prevail abroad; the sparrow, I say, flying at one door and immediately out at another, whilst he is within is safe from the wintry storm; but after a short space of fair weather he immediately vanishes out of your sight into the dark winter from which he has emerged. So this life of man appears for a short space, but of what went before of what is to follow we are utterly ignorant. If, therefore, this new doctrine contains something more certain, it seems justly to deserve to be followed."
And you're more of an elf queen than an elf princess. I'm sure that's what's messing up the vibes.

Yay! I *knew* someone would know what it was. Not a made-up thing, a real thing. That thing, there.

Also, if I'm an elf queen, can Hugo Weaving play me in the movie that will undoubtedly be made of my life? He's had experience being an elf, you see, and also experience being a (drag) queen... it'd be perfect!
