The eyestrain purple socks are at the ankles. This is the moment we've all been waiting for -- I can tell you've all been waiting on the edges of your seats to hear of this exciting development. Well. Now you can lean back a little and take a deep breath. We are at the ankles.

Anyway, the eyestrain purple socks are now at the point where I need to divide off the heel stitches and the top stitches. Generally, in the sock instructions I've seen, you do this by taking half the stitches for the heel treatment and leaving the other half on a different needle for later. That's the method I'll be using on the general suspicion that it will work as well for my socks as it does for people who knit with somewhat bigger yarn on somewhat bigger needles and have rather fewer stitches. So I have more stitches. I reckon the principle remains the same.

The heel stitches will get knit some more until they reach from the middle of the ankle bone to the ground. At that point, I will turn the heels, which is about as exciting as it gets in the knitting world, and pick up instep stitches off the sides of the heel flap with which I shall construct the sock gusset in a magical change of direction that must be seen to be believed. This looks a lot more impressive than it actually is and you don't honestly need detailed directions to be going on with no matter how much knitting pattern books think that you do. Screw 'em.

There will eventually be pictures of the finished products, though probably you won't be able to see anything interesting because the damn yarn is pretty dark. When there are pictures, I will expect everyone to pretend that the pictures show interesting details of hand-knit sockitude. (This is like saying nice things about my horses when they are in LJ pictures accompanied by enthusiastic commentary.)
