We have a water leak at the terrace to the tune of about four hundred dollars a month. This is annoying as well as expensive. Fortunately, the weather was cooperative and it was a gorgeous spring day to be outside in the fresh air and sunshine, digging up failing to dig up a sneaky, leaky water pipe. Even with a shovel in hand and no pipe in sight, it was a gorgeous day.

When I got home, I planted my twenty-five speculative strawberry plants. I do not know if they will work or not -- probably something will eat the little fuckers -- but I have planted them anyway. (The red raspberry cane things are not here yet -- they said it might be two shipments.) Strawberry plants are pretty unimpressive. I mean, I can't even take a picture of them because they're so
lame. But they *are* planted.

I also pruned all the dead bits off of my rose bushes. Some of them came through the winter better than others. The two rugosas (and no, I have no idea what their names are) are in great shape. Man, they are some healthy-assed rose bushes. Charles de Mills is also in good shape as is the nameless pink thing from the plant swap that was supposed to be stripey and instead was washed-out light pink but nicely scented. Paul's Himalayan Musk is not dead but did freeze some. He's got some lovely shoots coming up, though, so I remain hopeful.

The mock orange and the snowball bush, while not roses, are also in great shape. I look forward to more than one measly branch of flowering this year, mock orange. Do you hear me? More than one measly branch, you bastard! The snowball bush performs reliably and enthusiastically every year. I have no complaints about the snowball bush as it is a pleasant shrubbery that asks very little of me and provides me with several months of entertainment AND a place to bury my dead cats.

The horrible vine thing (It's a campsis vine. I really do like it but it's rather enthusiastic.) on the chimney is repulsively healthy. Every year I think it's dead and every year it leafs out well after I've given up hope. While it has no leaves at the moment, it's as thick as my wrist at the bottom and I could probably climb the chimney using it for support and hand-holds. At this point, any hopes I have of it having conveniently kicked off are more wishful than reality-based. On the plus side, it does flower and the hummingbirds like it. The red trumpet honeysuckle that is also climbing up the chimney is doing well and, at long last, the freaking wisteria is twining up the arbor I built for it many years ago. Apparently I can grow all kinds of viney things except for clematis.

I am always tempted by strawberry plants, but I am also pretty much too lazy to grow anything for eating aside from oranges (we have an enormous, ancient tree that doesn't need any help) and herbs. Man, in season strawberries are the most delicious thiing in the universe.

I usually grow a couple of tomato plants because I love, love, love tomato sandwiches. A lot. I grow mint (it's invasive) for iced tea. I grow garlic because it's easy. I also have black raspberries which require about three afternoons of work a year from me. (They wouldn't require even that if I didn't have issues about trellising them to keep 'em tidy.)

I'm planting red raspberries this year because my younger brother wouldn't make his into jelly for me. Lamer. Then he went and sold the damn house where they were growing. Lamer part deux. Clearly if I want red raspberries, I have to plant my own. The strawberries were not so much because I adore strawberries as because I needed like five more dollars of stuff to get to the "Order at least forty bucks of stuff from us and get twenty dollars off your order!" thing.

I might do jalapenos this year. They're fun and the deer don't eat 'em. (Deer are a significant problem for me.) Cilantro is also pretty worthwhile. And I might like some spring onions...

We're growing blueberries, but I have a suspicion that some bird is goign to eat the single, ripening fat berry as soon as it's ready. I don'tl ike blueberries but my mom wants them. I think we also have ether a raspberry or a blackberry thing we just planted. It has like...one leaf. My mom also grows tomatoes, btu I don't like tomatoes. So I guess we do grow a bunch of stuff, but I don't like them!
