I like horses. I really do.

But I loved this site... )

Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter.

The last book, for residents of Papua New Guinea who speak a language that is only shared by two hundred and fifty of their relatives and who probably don't have a written translation of the damn thing or an audiobook method of coming into contact with The Boy Who Lived, is coming out on Saturday. The rest of you already knew that, I'm sure.

What you don't already know is what I think is going to happen. And you want to know that, right? )

Had a nice horse outing today, went up the mountain (1.8 mile) and out along the ridge (probably .8 mile or so) and back (.8) and down (1.8). Call it 5.2 miles, 1300 to start, 2120 to stop, so like 820 feet up and then down again. It took us an hour and forty-seven minutes and we were going just under three miles an hour. Clearly, we need to improve if we're going to do 28 miles in four and a half hours or thereabouts. Fortunately, we have until September 21/22 to manage this.

We did half a mile at a moderate trot (more moderate than I'd have liked -- today was a no-bootie day for Nick and her feet hurt on the gravel road) and that took five minutes, so we're trotting the ten minute mile, or 6 mph. That's slower than I'd like for a working speed. I'll be bootied on Thursday and re-measuring over a larger distance to find out what speed my horse trots.

I also have to go out (again) with the car and mark off the notable items along the road so that we will have measured distances upon which to train. I have no head for distance, can't tell how long we've been going, etc, so having actual measurements will help. It is unfortunate that the entire ridge of Sideling Hill (which has a gravel road along it) looks like "woods bisected by a blue gravel road". Sometimes there are crossroads (unlabled) and there's at least one Forest Service Yellow Road Barrier. Sometimes there are actual state forest trail signs (brown with white lettering). There is no mileage. This isn't one of those organized, high-traffic state forests with marked walking paths and mileage and stuff. It's woods. Also, some of the extant features are not on the USGS map. Navigation is easy, but telling how far and/or rating your horse... not so easy.

Also on the agenda: teaching Cass how to read a contour map.

I'm tired.
