ダーズリー氏は鼻歌まじれで、仕事用の思いっきりありふれた柄のネクタイを選んだ。

Mr. Dursley, humming a tune and thinking about his workday, selected an unremarkably-patterned necktie. I'm pretty okay with my translation, here. The diagram is a bit hazy. I pulled some 'not quite right' things with the two dependant clauses. The way I've diagrammed it, 鼻歌まじれで and 仕事用の思いっきり are both roughly equivalent adverbial structures that add more information on Mr. Dursley. I am not sure that the original intent was this. It COULD be more like "Mr. Dursley, humming a tune, thought about his workday and selected an unremarkably-patterned necktie." I am reasonably happy translating 鼻歌まじれで as "humming a tune". I am not certain that 仕事用の思いっきり should get the same treatment. In either case, the diagramming for these, were I being fully kosher, would be up on little platforms. I decided against little platforms because (a) it takes a lot of space in Paint and (b) my brother Joe just called to tell me he was visiting.

In other news, one of my brother Roy's water lilies bloomed yesterday.
