Mar. 7th, 2006 10:21 pmMan, this pisses me off. Fucking Sports Fucking Illustrated. Actual magazine, probably has actual EDITORS. Of course, they aren't fucking doing their jobs...

Rain: N. Liquid water that falls from the sky. V. Act of liquid water falling from the sky.
Rein: N. Leather strappy bit on horse headgear, used for steering and stopping horse. Can be a verb with the preposition "in", means to steer or control via reins.
Reign: V. What kings and queens do. N. Period of a king or queen's rule
When you want to talk about letting someone do as he or she pleases, letting a person act without direction, that is FREE REIN. FREE REIN. Has nothing to do with kings and queens and ruling. Has LOTS to do with not steering the fucking horse using the fucking reins. NOT FREE REIGN. NOT. That is wrong. Do not write that. It is free REIN.
Similarly, when you want to control someone or bring a subordinate back into the fold, you REIN IN the person. It's like controlling an unruly horse. REIN IN. Not REIGN IN. This expression comes from horses. It's a horse expression. REIN IN.
I am going to strangle the next fucking person who writes "free reign" or "reign in".
Assholes.

Date: 2006-03-09 02:09 pm (UTC)I wonder if they simply cut/pasted from the excerpt of the book w/o further editing. To some extent this may simply have been a lack of editing by SI because they relied on the editing of the publisher. If they did that, they are lazy and the editor of the publisher is stooopid. If they made the mistake themselves, then they are stooopid. Either way, SI blew it. Stooopid or lazy: not exactly a dilemma you want ot be faced with.
