Jan. 28th, 2006 10:10 pmThe sekret knitting project has progressed to the third ball of yarn (yay!) and it is, therefore, a little more than a quarter of the way done. Two balls made just shy of eight inches, so I figure nine balls of yarn should do it. Of course, I bought eight. (I'm stupid like that.) Options at this point include (a) ordering another ball at the LYS, which would also give me the opportunity to order the teeny (0 and 1 sizes) addi turbo needles that I've been lusting over for socks OR (b) whining a lot about it and doing nothing productive. I think we all know which option would be more emotionally satisfying, but I ordered the ball of yarn (and the addi turbos) anyway.
The sekret project, which is not pastel, is being made out of single-strand KPPPM wool because I got the distinct impression that red heart acrylic (actually, anything in the entire plastic family) would be unacceptable. Generally speaking, the vibe I got there was that PROPER yarn, at some time in its life, should have gone BAA. KPPPM, a yarn made of things which once went BAA, comes in pretty colors and I like it. (The llama hat is made out of KPPPM.)
The sekret project is going to measure approximately 36" square. That's because this is the standard size for such items. It may exceed that by an inch or two in either direction depending on how blocking goes and when I run out of yarn, but it's going to be about that big.
The sekret project is being made on size 3 needles at approximately 7 sts and 12 rows to the inch. (This is the primary reason that progress is pretty incremental.) Some basic math tells us that the sekret project will contain about 108,864 stitches, each one individually handcrafted by me. Wow.
I fully expect the sekret project to be finished in advance of any actual need. It's moving right along despite my whining (above) to the contrary. Partly, this is because I picked a pattern I could do while watching television (subtitled or otherwise), but the fact that I'm multitasking while doing it does not, in any way, detract from the amount of labor involved. Also, I'd like to point out that as an heirloom item, the sekret project is expected to last through all instances of needing such an item. There will not be a DIFFERENT sekret project for any later instances of need.
Given the amount of time and effort involved, here, I feel certain that the recipient will act surprised and amazed and so forth no matter her actual state of mind. (Recipient, are you listening?)
