I have not yet been to see the new Harry Potter movie. This is because I am lame and because I avoid malls during the holiday shopping season. However, I read a delightful user summary of the new Harry Potter movie here. I can only hope that the actual movie is as much fun.

In other news, today I've been listening to the soothing sounds of gunfire since daybreak because Pennsylvania's deer season cranks up bright and early tomorrow morning and all the summer people are out shooting off their firearms in gleeful anticipation of that frabjous day. *sigh* I wish to hell they'd shoot does. But nooo, they can't possibly shoot does because it's unmanly and if they shoot does, there will be NO MORE DEER. Er. Not hardly. The summer people persist in thinking that there are not enough deer. I've got a seven-foot chickenwire fence around my yard says different. Down on Oregon Road and up on the mountain back of my house in state forest land, the state has erected Deer Exclusion Fencing so that the damned forest can regenerate. Inside the fences, there are baby trees. Outside the fences there are not baby trees except for striped maple which the deer will not eat. D'ya think that perhaps deer exclusion fences could maybe indicate that there are too many fucking deer? I mean, if the number of damn deer in the woods is so high and the browse pressure so intense that the DAMN TREES CANNOT GROW BACK, isn't that a sign that something's wrong?

Maybe I'm just stupid.

But, Teep, everyone knows that the bigger the antlers on the shot deer, the bigger the dick on the hunter. Does=no antlers=little dick. That's why no one wants to hunt them. :)

Though in Georgia what they generally have are doe seasons--they only have a stag season every couple of years.

There are not enough deer? In Pennsylvania? Maybe they live in a different Pennsylvania than you and I do. Because in the PA I live in....the deer seem to outnumber the humans. Maybe they just don't look outside.

This time of year reminds me of how good it is to not be working at a factory anymore. Though it was cool getting the whole week off and paid for, having to put up with deer huntin' stories for many weeks afterwards, was quite annoying. And it didn't matter that I wasn't a hunter, the 'necks would just cock their head sideways in slight confusion, then tell me the story anyway.

Other than that, I have nothing against hunting (I love animals- they're delicious!), it's just not my cup of tea.

Of course, once most people around here find out that I not only do not hunt, but also dislike football and NASCAR, I'm usually branded a communist.

Another unfan of NASCAR? Cool. Here is the extent of my NASCAR clue:

It is no longer the Winston Cup. It is now the Nextel Cup.

There are two Dale Earnhardts. The dead one is #3. The still-living one is #8.

Sterling Marlin is not a kind of fish.

At least your local random bursts of gunfire isn't the result of a disagreement between unofficial pharmaceutical distributors. I'm hard pressed to decide what's worse, armed rednecks or gun-toting thugs.

Mostly the rednecks in these parts are in favor of the proper sort of gun control, which is best summed up as hitting what you aim at. They don't generally gun down bystanders by accident.

So do you do anything with the horses during hunting season? I know some people will put on bright blankets/coolers on theirs. We put an orange shirt on on goat one year (kinda deer coloured, had horns); can't remember if we did anything to the horses.

The horses reside on private property that is reasonably well-protected from errant city hunters by way of being infested by the property owners and their firearms during deer season. The property owners also own horses themselves and thus do not generally aim at the horses.

I was talking to a deer-hunting friend of my parents the other weekend in Pittsburgh. He doesn't hunt any more because the woods in the area around his shack up in Allegheny National Forest are thoroughly hunted out. He thinks that the problem is that deer aren't stupid in large numbers, and that the areas where you *can* hunt are bare of the pests, because they're all off hugging the new developments and getting run down by cars in areas where you can't go blasting away for fear of plugging some hausfrau happy in her brand-new McMansion's kitchen window.

It's apparently pig heaven for the bow hunters, but you can imagine how many of them there are. Although I did see three of them the other week climbing into the birches and sycamores at the back end of the industrial park.

Incidentally, the Viet Cong called this tactic "hugging the belt-buckle", although they used it to avoid getting vaporized at a distance by American artillery and air-strikes.

Funny thing. They've got a deer problem there so large they can't deal with it, and have an overabundance of ferns because it's one of the few things deer won't eat.

Hunted out indeed.
