Instead, he had a large mustache that stood out. I'm not in love with this translation... I feel like I cheated on parsing 口ひげ as 'mustache'. It looks like two nouns to me. Noun for mouth, noun for mustache, but no conjunction or preposition or anything there between the two to let me know what the hell I'm supposed to do about it. My expectations are probably wrong, but they're what I have to work with here. So. Mustache it is. The dictionary I have informs me that そのかわり is a conjunction like "instead" or "and" so I diagrammed it as one. Since it doesn't have anything to conjunct with, I just stuck it up into the air. This is probably about as kosher as bacon.
I also cut the grass this morning, first time this year and not a moment too soon. I probably should rake the grass, but I'm not going to.
