One of the things I like so very much about fangirl wanks is the unexpected delight of voyeurism. It's like a free window into the things that other people like. I don't quite know why I think this is so much fun, but I do. For example, take a look at this list of the sorts of things that part of HP fandom would like to read. It's delightful. It's practically porn-on-tap, but the sheer variety of requests... the mind boggles.

And, well, the brief flashes of psyche that we get to see when people provide the writing prompts -- they're all sparkley. That's the best part, I think.

Any specialized field develops its own terminology. Sometimes it's to increase conversational throughput. Sometimes it's to allow folks to discuss matter of particular interest in more, er, detail than the normal person would feel was absolutely necessary. Sometimes it's so that normal people can't tell what the hell the insiders are talking about. (I think doctors do this one a lot...) In this particular case, the primary reason is for increased throughput. The obfuscation is merely a benign side effect.
