This is the list of various and sundry titles by Lockhart, who's a bit of an ass. Anyway, it poses challenges for the translator because the original titles are kind of cute and we wouldn't want that to get lost in translation, right...?
(Additional selections of HP-specific translations into Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese, for people with way more linguistic fu than I have, is available here -- honest to dog, I came up with this post on my own, but I was looking for the English titles to his books without having to go hunt up my copy of HP2. When I crib, I tell you where I got it from.)
Break With A Banshee becomes 泣き妖怪バンシーとのナウな休日. The alliteration (romanized via the required keystrokes to generate the characters in my text-entry program) is as follows: Naki youkai banshi- tono nauna kyuujitsu. Not sure that's very alliterative, but I was pleased to see that banshee became 泣き妖怪, literally 'crying demon'. That's not a bad job at all.
Gadding With Ghouls becomes グールお化けとのクル散策. Gu-ru obake tono kuru sansaku. Fairly alliterative, so I'm down with that. "Ghoul" becomes グールお化け -- Gu-ru monster, literally. (You should be getting the sneaking suspicion that traditional British monsters don't have specific words in the Japanese language.)
Holidays With Hags is 鬼婆とのオツな休暇 Onibaba tono otsuna kyuuka. 鬼婆 is a pretty fair match for "hag" and オツな was added in by the translator, as was クル in the previous one.
Travels With Trolls is トロールとのとろい旅 Toro-ru tono toroi tabi. I like the alliteration there. This one practically sings, so that's good. Interestingly, とろい is slow/dull/stupid, so what we have in translation is "Slow trip with trolls" or thereabouts.
Voyages With Vampires becomes バンパイアとバッチリ船旅 Banpaia (I do not know why the translator picked this spelling for vampire. She could have written ヴァ for VA and given us vanpaia, which is (IMHO) closer to the proper sound.) to bacchiri funatabi. Again, alliterative and again with added goodness.
Wandering With Werewolves is 狼男との大いなる山歩き Ookami otoko tono ooi naru yama aruki. I'm totally failing to parse this, but I do like that "werewolf" is literally wolf-man.
Year With the Yeti becomes 雪男とゆっくり一年 Yuki otoko to yukkuri ichinen. As in previous examples, we get added stuff (here, ゆっくり, which means "slowly" or "at ease") to fulfill the alliterative component of the title. Fair enough. Also, "yeti" is, quite literally, snow-man. Yay for that.
