I got an email today from someone who read one of my webpages. The sender wanted a couple of points clarified, nothing major. I usually try to answer my email because reasonably polite questions should be answered -- it's just good manners and you sometimes meet interesting people that way. When I sent my answer, I got back the following autoreply:

This is an automatic reply to your email message to xxxxx@peoplepc.com

This email address is protected by PeoplePC spaminator. Your email message has been redirected a "Suspect Email" folder for xxxxx@peoplepc.com. In order for your message to be moved to this recipient's Inbox, he or she must add your email address to a list of allowed senders.

That's just rude. I'm not sending UNSOLICITED EMAIL. I GOT an email from this person and I was replying to it. Yes, we all would like to live in a world where there is no spam and all that but it is the absolute height of fucking rudeness to SEND ME AN EMAIL REQUESTING A RESPONSE and then having your fucking spam filter DEMAND that I beg you to read the fucking response that YOU ASKED ME FOR. The link allowed me one hundred characters to express myself.

I'm supposed to jump through hoops so that you'll BOTHER to read the answer you wanted? Fuck that!

The sender can read it or not. I honestly don't give a shit at this point.

Do I have a spam filter? Bet your ass I do. Does it sometimes quarantine mail that belongs to real people? Sometimes, but not very often. However, it's invisible to the people sending me mail. They think the mail goes directly to me. I let them think that. It is my responsibility to check the blocked mail on a regular basis to make sure that things I want aren't getting stuck in there... it is not the responsibility of the sender to beg me to read the email that they sent.

Just whitelisting

Not being familiar with PeoplePC's email, I suspect that they have varying levels of spam controls set up, the most-stringent of which is likely content/subject filtering, combined with whitelisting. Whomever wrote to you probably set their email to be whitelisted. I wouldn't be that torqued up about it.

The thing I am objecting to is that this person sent me an email that SPECIFICALLY requested a response ("Please write me back...") and then did not bother to ensure that their dumb-ass mail filtering thingie would handle the requested response without harassing me further.

It's their loss, then. I wonder how much of their mail is getting sacked? Sort of diminishes the value of email if you can't receive it.
