Apr. 22nd, 2005 09:58 pmToday was pretty blah, but we did get a fair amount of rain, which we needed. I'm considering baking a cake this weekend to practice up for next weekend, when I will be taking a cake out in public for a covered dish get-together. I don't get to make cake all that often because mostly the people who eat my pies would rather have pie than cake. They are pie people. They admit that the cake is very nice, but they like pie better, so I make them pie. There's no point to making people cake if all they're going to do is sit there eating the cake and wishing like hell that you'd made them a pie.
Pie is pretty cut and dried for me. It's not a major hassle anymore, though it was a big headache when I first started making pies. My technique's improved, I guess, and I know not to sweat the small stuff so badly these days. Both of those help me with having a relaxed pie-making experience. I'm not quite to the pie-making-machine phase, but I can get it done and cleaned up inside of two hours for a start-to-finish pie extravaganza and considering that the damn things bake for forty to fifty minutes, that's not a horrible turnaround.
I don't make cake that often. I haven't made cake in more than three years. I'm out of practice. Probably I should evaluate my cake supplies and generate a cake this weekend so that I will know I'm able to do it next weekend. (This better not sound too much like rationalizing. I mean, yeah, it is, but it should *sound* rational or I'm not doing a very good job.)
