which_chickOkay, people. Today we have a discussion of yaoi bondage porn, with visual aids. The visual aids are from putting the porn under glass (no lie) and photographing it with my digital camera. Most of it is pretty decently in focus, at least for the pictures. Max image size is 188 Kb, which isn't bad. Some of the kanji are kind of hard to read, but we're not exactly here for the text and I don't think that many people in the studio audience have any working knowledge of Japanese. IMPORTANT: I am going to talk about yaoi bondage porn, with visual examples. Below the cut, you'll have the option (images are just linked, not in-line, so that you can read the commentary without looking at the pictures if that's what you want) to be exposed (hur, hur) to the complete text of a one-shot semi-stylized black-and-white comic of, well, porn. It's not a political statement or a reflection of reality. It's porn, stylized but still somewhat graphic, pretty boys drawn for the amusement of chicks. If you think you might have problems viewing this sort of material, don't hit the cut.
You people almost didn't get this but I figured out that the reason my fucking FTP was busted was that I wasn't letting (annoying) Sygate Personal Firewall start up and it had somehow fucked with my FTP. Also, note to self: Service Pack 2. It's about time.
Our sample text is from 絶対儷奴 (Zettai Reido) vol. 7. This is the anthology that carried 星の館, which is why I have a copy of it. The bulk of things carried in ZR do not appeal to me, but I wound up buying a fair number of volumes because of the difficulty in getting sections of 星の館 in any other way. One does what one must, and certainly if I'm shipping porn halfway around the world, I'll flip through it even if isn't quite my cup of tea. Might as well, now that it's here, you know? Also, ZR is about two hundred pages per. Only about twenty-five of those pages were of real interest to me in any given issue... hell of a rate of return on that, innit? So I looked at the other stuff they had. Some of it had crappy artwork, some of it had too much dialogue or ongoing storylines that I couldn't follow with my limited literacy, some of it looked like guy porn (for another day, we will discuss the visual and aesthetic differences between guy porn and chick porn) ... there just wasn't much that appealed. In the chunk of ZR issues that I have, there are precisely two storylines outside of 星の館 that I found worth mentioning. This is the shorter of the two.
The cover for this story introduces our subjects, the dark-haired guy and the blond guy. Ignoring the extraneous flowers, let us look at this visual to see what it can tell us about the story ahead.
Question for the studio audience: Who is going to fuck whom?
Studio Audience: The dark haired guy is going to fuck the blond. (You guys are so smart!)
Q: How do we know this?
SA: The dark haired guy has clothes, the blond doesn't. Also the dark haired guy is in the dominant position. The blond looks helpless.
The second page tells us a lot of things. For non-manga-reading members of the studio audience, read Japanese manga exactly backward of how you read Merkin comics. Start at the upper RIGHT and work your way down and leftward. You're mostly getting two pages in one image because I took the pictures with the book mashed open... so do the right leaf and then the left leaf for each image. This is important so that you can follow the flow of the story.
Right face: Our character (Edward, as it happens) is yelling for Ashley. We should be able to tell that Edward is rich. That's his house and the two old people who are deferring to him are probably servants.
Left face: お呼びですか -- Ashley's saying You called?. The アシュレイー at the bottom is in Edward's thoughts, not said aloud. You can tell because it doesn't have a word-balloon. (Puffy thought-balloons like we have in Merkin comics are fairly rare in manga.) I have no idea what the fuck happens in the lower leftmost panel. It looks like a chip or a stone or something gets thrown at Ashley, but I have no idea how or why.
The third page has Edward (the blond) mad at Ashley (the dark-haired guy). I imagine Edward threw the stone or whatever at Ashley -- he's pretty pissed for some reason. The old lady maid explains that whyever Edward is pissed, it wasn't Ashley's fault. Ashley, though... Ashley says "Edward-sama (honorific)... you're bleeding." And he licks it. Awww! (Remember, boys and girls, this is in fantasy manga land, where there is no HIV.) On the left leaf, we have Edward liking it and then not liking it. He tells Ashley to quit it (止める or やめる in all its various forms is an important yaoi manga word) and knocks him down. Hell of an arm on the boy, there. The maid lady asks Edward why he did that. He doesn't answer.
Turn to page four and we have non-dialogue stuff. This is a neat feature of manga and probably merkin comics could use it more often than they do. We get visuals, reaction shots, where we look at the pictures and figure out what goes in the spaces without words to help us. Neat stuff. Love that glare on our man Ashley, third panel on the right leaf. Edward says something I didn't bother to read. But he leaves in a hurry, clearly upset. Neck like that, I'd be upset, too. (This is what I mean about badly-drawn. Get over it. The chins are also weird in this manga.) On the left leaf the young hired help girl talks angrily about (probably) Edward's rudeness because somone (Probably one of the older hired help) says これ口を謹みなさい. I don't think it's Ashley because he's all nice to her in the next panel AND because she goes だってぶ instead of shutting up immediately.)
On page five, the plot thickens. Ashley is grinning like he knows something we don't. He says ここには尽くしてもしきれない程 恩があるからね. The rest of the word balloons are panting sounds and moans and stuff. Learning to distinguish between actual dialogue and general sex noises is an important skill for reading this sort of thing. A working knowledge of hirigana and katakana (which you can pick up in a weekend with some flashcards) will enable you to sound out virtually all the pants and moans, should that be of interest to you.
On the left leaf, we are given to understand what's going on in Edward's head, like we didn't already know. It's the hand-lickie thing! You don't really need the words, but Edward is moaning Ashley's name just in case you don't get the signify, there in the upper left. In the center of the page is a sound effect (バタン) which is the sound of the door opening. That'd be Ashley. (It's porn. We don't have all day, here.) Ashley says 続けろよ, which we'll read as Do carry on because this is my fantasy world and I want him to talk like that. (We are going to ignore, for the moment, that つづく appears at the end of assorted anime meaning "to be continued" and not "Do carry on". See me ignoring? I'm ignoring. Lalala, I can't HEAR you!)
On page six, Ashley continues to talk like a top: 俺が来る事を承知の上で始めたんだろ 望み通り見ててやる. I'm not having buckets of luck parsing that first, but the second part is most definitely Show me the way you like it. Yay for porn dialogue -- quite a few aspects of porn dialogue are fairly universal, a fact of life that's a big help to trying to read this sort of thing in foreign. Also, let's have a round of cheerful fangirl applause for Edward, who is demonstrating either astonishing savoir faire in the face of an unexpected audience or the general resiliency of the adolescent male libido. Doesn't matter which, really. On the facing page, note the foot-on-crotch motif here? No motif is an island. We have all run across this motif before, in the delightful review of that import video game I linked to a while back. All ya'll were paying attention, right? (While there are no scheduled quizzes, there are lots and lots of unscheduled quizzes. This was one of them.)
Turn to page seven and we have another useful word for the sort of porn I read. Our man Edward says "いっ痛い". This is actually "痛い" but he's kind of stuttering at the outset, which is why it's written the way it is. Means "Ow!" or "That hurts!" depending on how much a prig you want the manga character to be. Ashley, for his part, says 自分の手だけじゃ物足りないだろ. 俺が手伝ってやるよ. You'll not come just by your own hand... I'll help too. -- it's not really a decline-able offer. The ending やるよ is pretty emphatic.
On the left leaf, we have more delightful porn dialogue on Ashley's part. I know that the word balloon is near Edward, but I assure you that Edward is going はあ はあ and Ashley is the one going 痛い方がいいのか？ 淫乱なやつだ You liked being hurt? You're such a slut. He tells him to lick the semen off his shoe, which you should be able to parse without any words. Edward thinks back to when they were boys together. (Aren't they cute?) And he gets on with the licking. The words to his left are either his thoughts or narration. They aren't that important for our enjoyment of this particular scene, though, so I didn't bother to read them.
On page eight, Edward is damn near in ORZ. He says 俺の人の前でにいさんにつらくあたるなんてもういやだ 出来ないよ僕にはもう -- Why am I, the person in front of you, being treated badly by niisan (older brother)? Please, no more. I can't bear more... Ashley says that wasn't where he was going with this. He says お前が人前で俺を嘲れば嘲れるほど こうして俺はより深くお前を愛してやれる... You, the person in front of me, if you laugh at me, you laugh at me. Know this: I am made to love you deeply. (The verb's passive. Look, I don't write this stuff. I can barely read it. That, however, is a don't-laugh-at-me declaration of love from our brown-haired boy to the blond. Bank on it.)
Left leaf. 俺を罵倒する度にお前はその後に来る責め苦の快楽を期待して興奮するそうだろ There's a lot to that and I'm failing at parsing the clauses. Perhaps I'll take another stab at it tomorrow. Anyway, Edward says No, that's not... but we aren't listening to his mouth anymore. Ashley laughs and says 正直な躰だな Your body's honest, anyway. Besides, you can't argue with blood.
Page nine has one of those useful words you hear a lot as an anime fan. This is the first I've seen it written, but whatever. Ashley's still going on about Edward's heritage... 俺をこんなにした お前の変態親父とさ He did this sort of thing to me, your perverted father. The anime fandom word of usefulness is 変態 pronounced hentai. Means pervert. Lookit Edward, who appears confused. He's not getting the idea, so Ashley helpfully goes into backstory mode for us. I would like to point out that I didn't have to look up any of the kanji in the upper flashback word balloon, so go me! (I only got omocha due to the furigana gloss, but still...) Ashley says When your mother died, for about six years afterwards, I was that man's toy.. See? We get plot AND fucking. Really. There's plot. You just saw it. We're getting to the fucking here directly. Patience.
Left leaf. ほらしゃぶれよ does, indeed, mean Here. Suck it., in case you can't tell what Ashley wants from looking at the panel. This set of scenes is pretty well blocked, though. Manga artists usually do a pretty decent job of drawing people sucking other people off. It's a lot more blockable for optimum viewing angles than actual fucking, as we'll see directly. (Stylistic choices and the realities of camera angles also affect how live-action porn is filmed, btw. The only reason we're addressing it vis a vis manga is that this is the medium before us and it's only fair to consider why things are drawn the way they are.) Great revelation paired with what you'd think would be serious choking but 彼は受けだからアレを噎せません。 (not_your_real, you had better be laughing. I don't do jokes-in-foreign for just anyone.) Note that the camera angle isn't designed to show us bits. The camera angle is a whole-body shot, so that we can see the whole intent. The point in this panel is not particularly cock-in-mouth, though we have seen that before and will see it again. The point, HERE, is dominance.
