which_chickMeine Leibe, the aforementioned fluffy bishounen anime, is indeed flufforific.
It's a meringue of a thing, which does not make it bad, exactly. It scores well on a number of important fronts. It's got a quality voice cast. (Seki Toshihiko makes such an elegant bastard.) It's got nice character designs. It's got an actual animation budget with (wonder of wonders) half-decent production values. The score's not bad -- a bit heavy-handed, but not bad. Pity they couldn't spend any money on a plot for the thing, though. I think it'd be more fun with a plot.
It's kind of fun *now*, if only because the dialogue is way too slashy. Way. It's not just the fansubbers, either. My Japanese isn't great, but it's good enough to know that the fansubbers aren't pimping it up much from the original. "今のお前は一人でじゃない" is reasonably translated as "You aren't alone now." That's fair enough. But guy #1 says this to guy #2 with meaningful looks and stuff. Probably it's the meaningful looks that make it slashy. And then we have "美しい目だ", translated as "You have beautiful eyes" said by guy #3 to guy #4. While he says that, guy #3 is holding guy #4's cheek in what I am unable to read in any straight-guy way because if guy #4 were a chick, guy #3 would so be hitting on him.
The aestheticism review says Maybe Meine Liebe is the prettiest and gay-friendliest* set of animated paper dolls ever presented to a female audience by a studio. 'Here you are! Now draw your doujinshi!' -- The paper doll interpretation resonates with me for the yaoification of any series, but... I don't know. I think maybe yaoification is more fun if we have to work for it. In Meine Leibe, it's handed to us on a silver platter and that may make it too easy to be fun. I'm not sure that transgression is a requirement for a satisfactory yaoification experience, but it doesn't hurt. I think we can all agree that it's not very transgressive to yaoify something that's DESIGNED to be yaoified.
*In this context, gay-friendliest has nothing to do with what actual gay men may or may not like. Sorry, guys, but this is not about you. At all. It has to do with how easy, rewarding, and fun it is for chicks to arrange pretty boys in attractive, amusing, entertaining mix-and-match combinations. (Think Garanimals, here. Attractive seperates that color-coordinate and *match*...) Fangirl yaoification has as little to do with homosexual politics as all those lesbian scenes in straight porn... it's approximately the same thing.
