Mind. Blown.
Sep. 24th, 2023 07:41 amSo I read a lot of slush novels on KU because they're very affordable reading in the same way that I watch a lot of slush television on Netflix. When it's free-ish, my consumption goes right the hell up. That's not the shocker part here. One of the genres that I read fairly frequently, if it is well-defined enough to be a genre, is the concept of Dude (usually dude but not always) Goes Back In Time (or winds up in an alternate-but-similar timeline by way of handwaving that amounts to being hit on the head by a frying pan) to be technologically advanced compared to his new surroundings.
These are kind of fun books. They're fun in the worlds that the characters wind up in. (It's not always the middle ages. Sometimes it's Rome. Sometimes it's China during the Warring States Period. Sometimes it's Fantasy Old Timey Europe with handwaving. It's whenever the author wants.) And then our somewhat overpowered MC goes forth to improve history. They're fun in seeing what things from modern times the author thinks ARE important to put forth in the old timey setting. And it's interesting to see what CAN be implemented in that time and place.
What I didn't, er, put together was that this entire genre of novels is pretty much Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court fanfic. It's endless coffee shop AUs of Connecticut Yankee. I am, yes, totally OK with this. But I didn't effing put it together with Mark Twain for a long time.
