I did about an hour and a half of road work with Bird last night. It was kind of damp and humid and I was kind of *meh* on the whole thing so I decided to go the bareback pad route. (A bareback pad is just a thick wool-n-suede pad with a girth, no stirrups or anything.) I figured it'd be fine.

It was mostly fine. Our roads are typically quiet and generally it's just one or two passenger cars or pickup trucks. But we got to the end of the lane and turned onto the hard road and literally not fifty feet from the end of the lane, a semi came down around the turn. Fuuuuu.

(Semi: Big freight-hauling truck. There's a good picture at the top of this article. These trucks are not small. He wasn't bobtailing, either.)

The road is a two-lane road with a central single yellow line (this is one step up from "road without a line" but not busy enough for two yellow lines like most secondary roads). It's not a road that generally sees full-size freight trucks.

To his credit, Bird did a brief, in-place, not sure if he should shit or go-blind stutterstep and by then the truck had wooshed by (his mane blew in the wake of it) and we were on our way. However for more than half the rest of the ride, he was seeing dangers everywhere, real or imagined, and just did not settle down. He wasn't... bad, but he was just overly look-y for quite a long time.

But we got the job done, so yay.

I also picked the first batch of raspberries. They're a little early this year (usually it's Fourth of July week) but I got 334 grams, which is not even a quarter of what's on the canes.
