All points bulletin, because I am so, so, so fucking tired of this.
reign: the act of ruling. Thing done by a king or queen. Also (noun) the period of rule.
rein: (with -in) a verbish thing used to mean ‘taking control of’. Also (noun) a strappy leather piece attached to the horse’s head to control it, usually found in pairs.
rains: verb for the act of liquid falling down. Also noun for the liquid that droppeth from the heavens to wash us all clean again.
Rein in. (kind of verb-ish) Means taking control of, hauling back in under control. This is like if you’re on a horse that’s getting away from you and you pick up the reins and take the slack out of 'em and get the horse back under control. I have lost count of the fics in which character A had to rein in his desire for character B. Only they spelled it 'reign in’ and that ruined the porn for me. *sigh*
Free rein. (noun) Means letting a person or other subject do as it will. This is like a rider dropping the reins of his horse and letting the horse kind of amble along under its own direction. Note that the expression comes from horses. So, use REIN. After winning dominion over Hell, Crowley let his demons have free rein over the crossroads of the earth.
Tight rein. (noun) Means keeping a very sharp eye and good control over the person or subject because it needs to be closely controlled. Thor needs to keep Loki on a tight rein.
reign (verb) Means rule. "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven,“ thought Crowley. (Sure, it was Lucy’s line from wayback, but he wasn’t too proud to steal from the father of lies.) This (better to reign in hell…) is about the only time you can use reign in appropriately. Mostly you probably mean rein in.
reign (noun) Castiel’s brief reign as God was marred by completely unwarranted attacks on hypocritical preachers and new-age spirituality.
rain (verb) The act of water falling from the sky, also to come down upon like rain does. He let his cum rain all over Dean’s face. (There’s a picture of this somewhere. It’s beautiful.)
rain (noun) Means water-that-falls-from-the-sky, a kind of weather. My, we’ve gotten a lot of rain this spring.
