which_chickAs I mentioned in this post, the remaining food budget for 2005 was 1870.53. Since I went to the grocery this evening, the NEW, IMPROVED remaining food budget is now 1853.04. Some of you in the studio audience are already pretty well briefed on what sorts of things I eat. The rest of you are probably wondering how in the hell I get out of a grocery store for less than twenty bucks a visit.
1/2 gallon milk, skim, calcium added: 1.71 (I cook with this and put it in my coffee. I do not drink milk plain and I don't eat cold cereal. Half a gallon lasts me a week.)
2 pounds stick butter: 4.00 (was on sale. I do not put butter on vegetables anymore. Butter is for cooking (chapatis, crepes, grilled cheeses) and for on popcorn. I stuck one of the two pounds in the freezer -- it'll be some time until I get to it.)
1 pound sharp cheddar: 3.99 (eaten in one-oz chunks with otherwise entirely protein-free meals, also sliced thin for grilled cheeses, made into sauces for broccoli, cauliflower, grated over mushroom-and-egg non-omelets, put on egg sammiches, etc.)
1 lb. button mushrooms: 2.89 (I like 'em a lot. They go in many things.)
5 lb. rome apples: 3.99 (I take one or two to work every day for lunch. I like gala better but the romes were a better deal this week. Pink grapefruit, which I am very fond of, are STILL a buck apiece and I ain't paying that for a fucking grapefruit.)
.92 lb kale: .91 (I will probably be putting it in whatever I decide to do with the mung beans.)
There is no tax on actual food items in the great state of Pennsylvania, so that's precisely what I spent.
For future reference, if I'm gonna eat (or drink) it, it's a food item. According to my rules, coffee is a food item. Cat food is not a food item. Toothpaste and mouthwash are not food items. Beer and french fries are food items, or they would be, if I spent money on them. All clear?
