which_chickI got an email today from someone who read my unlovely translations of 星の館, the yaoi bondage porn I mention occasionally. She produced a scanlation of one of the chapters, naming me as the translator. *blush* I only wish I were more freaking *capable*... Probably I should not be allowed to take credit for translating this stuff. (If Sakurai were real, he'd lay me out for making him talk like a pompous ass. He's actually cooler than I can make him sound. Good thing he's pretend.) Anyway, the person who emailed me sent a link to the pages -- they really are quite spiffy, but password protected for obvious reasons.
For the segment of the studio audience who is not up to speed on yaoi bondage porn, I snagged a page of the scanlation and put it on my own server (it's WRONG to steal bandwidth!) for all ya'll so that you can understand what I'm going on about, here. Go look. (It reads backwards from English because it was Japanese to start with.) I was careful to pick a relatively non-objectionable page with actual dialogue, too, so while this isn't all-ages material, it's also not very "GAH! My EYES!!" Go me!
Anyway, that email was a day brightener -- I had a twelve-hour day today because the secretary was out getting a lump cut out of her boob. Her husband, the employee Ed, went with her, so there was just me in the office all day. That rather sucked. I also had the outside auditor person visit today. Yum! Fun for all ages.
The email also motivated me to check out the author's webpage (the Japanese lady who wrote and drew the thing in the first place), where I was most pleased to discover the following:
完売になって久しいバックストーリー１を商業誌として出して頂く事が出来てとってもラッキーでした。
According to the fine (good enough) translator at babelfish, this says "Becoming complete sale, being possible, to start long backs Tory 1 as a commercial magazine very it was lucky." Since I have a lot of experience with reading Japanese via babelfish, I was able to immediately grasp that this meant the self-published backstory episodes were now commercially available. w00T! So I checked on amazon.co.jp and indeed, forsooth, there she be. I *so* have got to order this, and the purple volume that preceded it. They're more portable than the Zettai Reido volumes.
Zettai Reido (絶対麗奴) is an anthology manga that, on the cover, in English text, says SM COMIC FOR GIRLS. Only in Japan... Anyway, no matter what the cover says, some of the stuff they published, particularly late in its run, looked to me like manga of guys fucking aimed at gay guys rather than manga of guys fucking aimed at straight chicks. (I am not splitting hairs, here. This is an important genre distinction, damn it.) Anyway. ZR serialized the yaoi bondage porn originally. As it was fairly popular stuff, it was later collected up into neat little books and sold as its own thing. I bought those where possible instead having to buy the stuff twenty-three pages at a time and bundled with a lot of other stuff that wasn't very appealing. (In the ZR that I have, there are precisely three storylines other than this one that held my interest at all, one of which is going to serve as the floor model for my discussion of reading porn in a language you can't read.)
