Oct. 17th, 2012 10:26 pmThis fall, I started to break the Ungrateful Babies. Ya'll remember the Ungrateful Babies. Well, they're now halfway through their four year old year.
The Ungrateful Babies are Peake (Four Oaks Chesapeake) and Te (Four Oaks Montego). They're half-sisters, respectively out of GF Nile Kaia ("Nick") and KC Santana ("KC"), both by Trevor. Now, a lot of the time, horse names have something to do with the sire and dam names. That was certainly the intent, here.
It may be that you are now wondering how we got "Chesapeake' and "Montego" from "Trevor", "KC Santana" and "GF Nile Kaia". You should be wondering. What happened was this: Arabian horse papers say "Trevor" (the horse's name) followed by "Bay" (his color). These are written in the same font and on the same line. The color word is capitalized. For people who don't spend much time perusing Arabian registration papers, it is disconcertingly easy to maybe read a horse's name as "Trevor Bay" and not "Trevor", color "Bay". (I'd never seen Trev's papers until I needed to fill out the paperwork to register the Ungratefuls. At that point, it became obvious that Trevor was just "Trevor" because GF Nile Kaia was not GF Nile Kaia Bay even though her papers said that.) By then, though, the Ungratefuls had already been named after bays. Oops.
So anyway. Peake and Te are the Ungrateful babies. They need to be riding horses. Somehow, this got to be my job. I don't really LIKE the Ungratefuls, but if I had to take one of them, it'd be Peake. I dislike her less than Te.
How's the breaking to ride thing going? Pretty fairly.
Peake: Rides in a bridle at the walk and trot, outside (we don't have a ring), stands for mounting, can be posted upon, stops and turns fairly reliably, backs up, is working on bending. Has been on an actual trail ride (with a buddy) to the exciting land of the buckwheat field, far away across the road. Comes when you call "Peakely" (pronounced Peek-a-lee)
Te: Rides in bridle (very beginner, has completed ride 1) at walk and sedate jog, in yard ("outside" is across the road, in the open fields), stands for mounting, stops and turns somewhat, backs up. Has not been on an actual trail ride yet. Is learning to come when called "Te-Te" (Like Lipton. Twice.)
We're making progress. I'd like to get a "real" trail ride on Te before it gets cold, plus also there needs to be basic cantering for both of these guys before winter. Once we've got that, they can spend the winter not-being-ridden and I'll pick back up with them in the spring. One or both of the Ungratefuls is going to have to go to the competitive ride, damn it all. Competitive riding does make for very broke horses, but damn it's boring.
