I am declaring defeat on T1's pornfucked box. It's not the spyware or the virii that has made me throw in the towel. The primary challenges facing me are that it's win98 (so retarded on the networking front, yo) and unable to handle any USB anythings. Oh, and did I mention that either the video card or its drivers (don't know which) is so horribly fucked up that there IS no clear and readable text on the monitor "energy saver" splash screen, during the dos prompt (or at any time beyond that) boot sequence, or in windows? The mouse drags a big, blurry area around the screen with it. The refresh isn't happening so it leaves a slime trail. Oh, the pain.

Fuck me.

Just... yeah. Fuck me.

Tomorrow, for shits and giggles, I am taking it (just the hard drive) into work, where I will slave it to another computer's drive and slurp all of the data off the fucking thing onto my iomega so that I can burn it to dvds for him. (I have a laptop at home, so this is not really doable at home. Laptops do not have accessible cases that can be cracked and they don't have huge ass cables and big old dipswitches and stuff.) Data recovery was what he wanted, so data recovery is what he's going to get. As for the fucking graphics situation? I dunno. I have not ever seen a box that refused to provide clear and visible text in text mode. That screams "hardware issue" to me and I am not going to buy parts for this piece of shit. No. Not me.

I kept a series of otherwise-abandoned Win95 boxes on my desk at home until 2006, so believe me I'm not over-reacting when I say, put a bullet in its brain and call the glue factory. He can get a used Win2000 box somewhere for a hundred bucks, I bet. Hell, it's what I did when my last Win95 keeled over and died.

Good luck on getting any data off the hard drive.

He has a better, more functional computer at home already. The reasons he wants this one worked on are (a) to give the box to the kids and (b) in the data that he would like to get off are the last pictures taken of my friend La's son before he died last year. He thinks she'd maybe like to have them. I concur.

The hard drive works OK and I think I'll be able to recover data off it. The box boots to win98 and logs me in and everything. I can get to (in a blurry and unreadable fashion) Control Panel and browse the C: drive and the fucking internet (when it's plugged into my DSL router) even works. The problem is not the hard drive. The problem is that I can barely see the screen. The video doesn't work any better when booted off of Trinity or off of other linux distro boot disk. The video issue feels very hardware to me... changing the OS that boots the box doesn't fix things, so I can't blame this on a "windows" problem.
