Jul. 1st, 2008 10:22 pmEvening with the ponies.
DIdn't do much with Callie besides feed her and work on trotting for the lead-out portion of the vet checks. Boring, yes, but we were out riding on Saturday and Sunday over the weekend, with actual canter cues and everything (we canter now) and she was fine. She needed a day off.
Lutely and I had a nice ride on Saturday, six miles or so, w/t/c by ourselves. We went down the covered bridge road, up to the hill opposite, made a left, and rode down past Herbie's and Chris's to the stopsign, continued on straight over the creek, and made another left onto 126 to come home. I saw enough beer cans that I'm considering taking a sack and a stick with a nail on it on our next ride so's to collect up the cans for money. Someone (not naming names, here) drinks a shitload of Keystone Light.
This evening, I took Lute out and we worked on ground driving. (This is me walking behind the horse on the GROUND and DRIVING her using really long reins. It's like I was driving her in a cart, only without a cart.) The reason we did that is because it's one of the first things you do when teaching a horse to drive. Lutely is my practice driving project. For the first fifteen minutes or so, mostly she was confused about what the hell was going on. (Since she's a non-reactive, even tempered pony, this was not very dramatic or exciting.) It was like she didn't think I had any right to be giving orders seeing as how I was not leading her or sitting on her. Then, all at once, it was like a light came on and she was all better. We walked and halted and trotted and backed up and turned left and turned right and STOOD STILL. All of that was good, so I put her away for the day (end on a good note). On the way home, I stopped by Tasha's to pick up the saddle/turrets thing (this is the part of the harness that goes around a horse's middle and has rings at the top for the reins to go through) for better driving practice. Tasha will need it back next Tuesday but by then I should have a different borrowed harness to use.
