I have a lot of free time in my evenings now that I'm not doing endless horse activities. It's not yet six PM and I'm bored. I could do things with my yard (disgraceful) and my woodpile (similarly bad). I could do inside chores -- I've forgotten what the top of the coffee table looks like. The area rug under the dining room table is covered with cat hair. I think it used to be mostly black. There's always the HoHI, too. I haven't forgotten them.

I need another horse project. The game plan with the IRH was to break her to ride (did that) and to condition her for the state 4-H competitive ride (did that) and to complete The Ride (Totally did that. Booyah.). I'm not *done* with the IRH, but the current set of goals has been met. I need some new goals.

There's this other horse, see. She's kind of cute, for a four year old. She's a bay, big hipped, nice eyes. Shoulder isn't bad, legs are mostly okay with pasterns on the long side, and she's smart like a whip but a lot more even-tempered and non-reactive than the IRH. She might be a Skoal daughter, but we're not 100% on that. Her dam was named Jupiter and I've about convinced La that the unnamed big-hipped bay should be named Callisto (La likes it better than Europa and I couldn't sell ANYONE on either Io or Ganymede). We can call her Bear for short.

The other choices just didn't do it for me. The options included Tanqueray, Whimsy, Copenhagen, Cuervo, Proof, Jagger, Chickpea, Ceres, Chessa's baby, Briar's baby, Keystone, the other young bay that looks like sphinx, and Eikon's baby. I think that's it, plus Callisto.

I need some good horse names -- these things that are three years old without names, no. We are NOT going to spend another year calling the cute little buckskin "Ike's baby". They're all girl horses, if that matters, and they need names. We've quite a few whose names derive from alcoholic beverages if that works for you. (We already have or have had Mai Tai, Whiskey, Tequila, Cooler, Bacardi, Redeye, Irish Red, Mezcal, Cuervo, Guinness, Rye, Thistl, Daquiri, Martini, Proof...) Suggestions?

1. Plain bay horse, no markings, looks like Sphinx (another plain bay horse, no markings). I forget whose baby she is, but she isn't Sphinx's baby.

2. Briar's baby. Chestnut with some white on the legs, broad blaze.

3. Chessa's baby. Chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, some white feet, a narrow and shapely blaze. She's a looker.

4. Eikon's baby. Buckskin, blaze, at least one white foot. A strikingly pretty little mare. (Ike is so named because she's the daughter of Image. Image --> Eikon --> ?)

I think cousin sue is on to something. The Harry Potter series could offer a wealth of great horse names.

Trendy stuff is kind of hard. It looks cute at the time but goes out of fashion really quickly.
