Yesterday I engaged in falling-off practice with the pony and that went amusingly. See, she bucks or whatever and I fall off (only sometimes) and then she gets more scared or whatever because I'm there on the ground all crumpled and stuff and she pulls back *hard* and rips the reins out of my hands. It's annoying. (And then she runs off for a lengthy game of can't catch me with her tail flying high over her ass.) She's broken reins when I didn't let go fast enough. This is annoying and unacceptable. Yesterday, I instituted a new way.

I rigged up a twenty-two foot rope, about seven feet of which is actually "rein" -- it starts at one bit ring, goes around to the other bit ring, and then has a hellishly long tail. The hellishly long tail is tucked into my belt loop so that I have something to hold onto. (It's not tied, just tucked in there. It'd rip the beltloop if the horse went ballistic and I didn't have a good hold on her.) Falling off practice means I walked her around the yard and fell off at unspecified intervals. I didn't really think she'd be dumb enough to drag me twenty feet by the reins but I was wrong. It was kind of like dirt surfing once I got used to it. She did improve (less pulling) with practice.

Today we went on a trail ride and she did fine. I'm beat, and so to bed -- I'm falling asleep in front of the laptop screen.
