Jul. 23rd, 2006 10:34 pmI'm going Round 2 with the Korean Death Spices tonight. Round one of the KDS was a couple of months ago and not terribly impressive. My cat ate the leavings, with enthusiasm. Turns out, however, that the KDS is a two-step process of which I'd only been provided one step.
I betcha the second step is the seven-league bootie. (Friend Ben drinks some kind of cinnamon death beverage that I swear is flammable. He has at least some cred in the food department and would probably not be calling this KDS without some cause.)
(Later)
The spice part is, er, spicier. I had a pretty heavy hand with the spices, used about half of what Ives gave me on five slices of pork loin. It's spicy. Not inedible, but spicy. Burny lips, inside-of-mouth, and so forth. The KDS taste sort of like fabric softener, which seems kind of weird. There's like a florality to it, and not a floral-ish spice I already know. Not, say, cardamom. I think this is inherent in the KDS rather than due to the fact that I ran the tightly-closed ziplock through the wash before using the KDS. (They were dry when I opened the ziplock. I figured no harm, no foul. Also, I saved 'em after the washer step, not after the dryer step. And my fabric softener sheets don'ttaste smell like this.)
Still tasty. Cat still licked the plate clean. Ivy, if you try this, go lightly. It's got a fair amount of heat but not like a red pepper burning-lips heat. It's weird. I wasn't like reaching for the water or anything, but I eat further on the spicy side than you do unless your tastes have changed radically here of late.
Anyway. Lots spicier, sort of floral, kind of burn-y but not terrible. And the cat likes it.
