One of the slightly annoying downsides of being me is that I get told (in a nice, request-y sort of way) what to bring to covered-dish functions. I thought the general point of covered dish functions was to spread out the cooking by giving them as cooks an opportunity to show off their M4D L33T cooking skillz.

Oooo-er! Go on, do deformed rabbit, it's my favorite! )

So today I'm showing an apartment to prospective tenant J and the roommate she'd mentioned over the phone. J. looked like a girl and her roomate looked like she'd really rather be a boy, in a cute, boyish sort of way. As a general rule, I do not inquire into the nature of the relationships between or among the people looking to rent an apartment because that isn't my problem. The sleeping arrangements are not any of my business. Whether the rent gets paid or not, that's my business. Whether or not they trash the place, whether or not they try to keep a cat, whether or not they get along with the other tenants, whether or not they're trying to deal heroin out of my apartment, these things are my business. But who is doing whom and why, that is not my business and I don't much give a fuck except out of idle curiousity. These two, though, I was wondering. I couldn't ask -- that'd be rude, rude, rude. But I was wondering.

So I show them the place and the cute, boyish one is articulate and sensible for all that she's got a fistful of metal on her face (two rings through her lower lip and I think a tongue stud, at least one brow ring and a nose piercing). At the end, we shake hands and whatnot, and I notice there is a tattoo on her forearm, katakana spelling out J--- (name of other girl). And, y'know, like a dork, I read that out loud. Prospective tenants looked at each other in shock and simultaneously asked "How did you know what that said?" and I was like "I can read Japanese." They looked kind of chagrined but not angry. The boyish one said, "Well, at least now we know that it really does say J----."

Pwn3d!

If Yawara does not end up with the nice newspaper reporter, I'm going to complain. Lots. He's cute. He has a good heart. He's got the voice of Seki Toshihiko. What's not to like? Also, her grandfather Jigoro is completely oblivious. Completely. His own vision is kind of amusing. Kazamatsuri is not a good choice, good hair or no. No man who perfumes a banana hammock is worthy.
