Oct. 26th, 2005 09:55 pmDid sanding and a third coat on the dresser drawers and main body tonight. Looks good, still. The sanding is very light, scuff-sanding for when finishing, so it doesn't take very long. I also glued in the three remaining drawer slider rail thingies. I am NOT feeling guilty about the fact that they're more-or-less painted green. You can't see them when the dresser has its drawers in and is being operated in the normal way. The only way you'd see the drawer slider rail thingies is if you took the drawers completely out for some reason. They're allowed to be mint green. (It's the color of paint on the scrap wood I have on hand.) The missing drawer guide strips (2) will be made of the same material when I get around to making them.
I also went over the drawer handles a third time with Zar and steel wool (whee!) and got them down to where all I need is one more go-round with the fine steel wool before I can start finishing them. (There is no way to make up for insufficient sanding later on. It sucks and it's boring and it's a lot like work, but if you don't do the fucking sanding up front, you are NEVER going to have a decent finish. You might as well do it right to start. Otherwise, you're just going to wind up stripping off your insufficient finish and resanding. Do it right the first time and save yourself the hassle.)
The decorative kick board at the bottom of the dresser is also a problem. I haven't started stripping that because it's missing about two inches off of one of its feet. The rest of it is intact, but it needs a foot. I'm not sure how well I'm going to be able to match the wood and/or make it have a foot. Since this is a purely decorative piece rather than a functional piece, the world will not end if I fail. However, it's an interesting problem and I will probably learn something along the way.
