I cleaned a bunch of crap out of TA15 today. That's where we got rid of what we'll call Heather and Friends. Heather was our tenant. The other people living there were not on the lease. Anyway, we evicted Heather and her friends. They knew they were being evicted because, while nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition, it's pretty hard to have a surprise eviction...



For those of you who are rent-paying persons, it works like this. The landlord has a beef with a tenant. Usually this is because the tenant isn't paying any rent, but sometimes it's because the tenant is leaving her strung-out druggie friends laying in the yard and upsetting the other tenants with druggie noise at all hours. As a result, the landlord files a complaint against the tenant with the local JP. Filing the complaint costs around a hundred dollars (130.00 in Bedford, 110.00 in Everett). The JP schedules a hearing, which usually takes place ten days or so from the date of filing. After the hearing, there are ten full days. You cannot go in on Day 10 -- it has to be Day 11 or later. After the ten days, on the next BUSINESS day, there is the filing of the order for possession. That costs $150.00. The constable schedules a possession and the tenant gets notified (in writing) when that will be. The order for possession takes ten days after the tenant gets notified. On the appointed day, the constable goes to the apartment and there is a changing of the locks and a posting of the notice and a throwing out of the tenant.

Sometimes, there are tenants who believe that this cannot happen to them despite the fact that they've gotten official notices for the hearing, the results of the hearing, the order for possession, and the scheduled date of the possession. They are wrong.

For you today, I have a spiral bound notebook with the name Brittany S. Mellott on the front of it. It was left behind when the constable came and continued to be left behind during the three afternoons when Heather and Friends were schlepping their stuff out of the apartment from which they had been evicted. (Saved me from having to carry it out, is why. Saved me from having to store it.) It was left behind when I asked the tenants if there was anything else that they wanted from the apartment... and now it's mine.

It's been such a long time since I ... thought there was a line there at all. It's an unexpectedly touching remnant of chastity.)
