which_chickI spent the rest of the day plowing through mixed-quality Snarry fic in an effort to get over the cookie debacle. (The fact that it was a debacle didn't stop me from eating soggy lime sand tarts.) It's frankly amazing how many happy endings we get in Snarry fic. (I'm not complaining. I like happy endings well enough and the genuinely unhappy ending in smut fanfic is an avis rara enough that the classic efforts still make me all weepy-eyed.)
Speaking of fanfic, there should be huge volumes of fic hitting the ether that discuss how Snape and Malfoy-the-younger spend the summer hangin' with the DE crowd and Voldie before the onset of Book 7. I'm thinking blood sports. I'm thinking all the very best kinds of noncon. I'm right there looking for torture and unhappiness and character deaths and evil DE experiments with, y'know, extra smut. And if you can't write me that, I'm also okay with Snape-and-Draco on the run from the entire wizarding world, living in Muggle England and keeping their heads low in a World Gone Mad. Yeah. That'd work too. With 1,000 Elephants!
And yet... and yet... I do not see the multitudinous sea incarnadine with the aforementioned fanfic. I'm not seeing it. Where the fuck is my pervy fanfic, you fanfic writers, you?! Come on, the broad WANTS you to write fanfic like that, else she'd not have left Snape run off with Malfoy-the-younger. What, you want an engraved invitation?
How can people not want to write this? Look. It's easy. We know that Draco has displeased Voldie by being unable to kill Dumbledore. (It's okay that he probably wasn't supposed to succeed. What really matters here is failure, and Draco managed the failure, spectacularly.) We also know that Snape killed Dumbledore and, in so doing, probably pleased the Dark Lord. I can't really see V. being upset that Dumbledore's dead, no matter who killed him. As far as Voldie's viewpoint, Draco deserves punishment and Snape deserves a reward. In my own little world, the Dark Lord reduces dumb-ass failures to the sex toys of more successful Death Eaters. Two birds with one stone, as it were. Punish the failures, reward the successful. He's probably mad enough to think it's an efficient way of doing things. Also, Rowling hasn't said that ISN'T how it works, has she? No. I've read all the books and none of them state that V. does not use sexual slavery as a motivational tool and/or perq of being a Death Eater.
The books say other things. Dumbledore's dead. Fawkes (does anyone else think of Guy Fawkes? Dudes, Fawkes was a traitor. Is Rowling just referring to the burning thing phoenices do, or is she giving us some kind of hint about the damn bird?) is gone. Sirius is dead. Bill and Fleur are an item. Harry and Ginny are an item, kinda. These are facts that are in the books and I won't contest them. Conveniently ignore, yes. Contest, no. However, the DE perqs are not in the books. It could be like that inside DE Headquarters. (Lest you forget, Voldie is a guy who once said to Wormtail, "I will allow you to perform an essential task for me, one that many of my followers would give their right hands to perform..." [Goblet of Fire] Read that again. Recall that at the end of the book Voldie makes Wormtail cut off his own right hand as part of the resurrection process. Voldemort thinks he's being all kinds of funny and smarter than everyone and so, so sly. Then consider the crap we got on him here in Book 6, when he was a kid in history back. The man's a freaking sociopath. This is the sort of man who'd get a kick out of using sexual slavery for reward and punishment.) It's equally true, but far less amusing, that the DE perq could be unlimited frequent flyer miles, dental and vision, or free daycare. We just don't know for sure. Rowling hasn't bothered to share this information with us.
Now, I maintain that Snape is still a good guy (despite killing Dumbledore in book 6) but since V. & co will be checking up on how he's making out with Malfoy, Jr., he's going to have to put at least a little visible mileage on the boy. And yes, of COURSE he'll do it. He fucking killed Dumbledore for versimilitude. He can certainly roger the younger Malfoy for the same reason. Besides, I imagine that one does not decline to use the gifts of the Dark Lord. If the Dark Lord gives you a Ronco Turnip Twaddler for Christmas, you'd damn well better be out there in the fields on Boxing Day, twaddling turnips like you enjoy it. I think that if we accept the premise that the DE ranks work on a sexual slavery system of reward-and-punishment, there's going to be no doubt in anyone's mind that the gifts are going to have to be used.
So, y'know, premise. Now, does Malfoy know if Snape is a good guy or not? He's... what... sixteen? How much complexity do we grant Malfoy, Jr.? He gets some angst in book 6. I never thought he'd wind up bawling in Myrtle's bathroom, but, hey, that's what we got. I don't write the books. I suspect that Malfoy, Sr. does not know Snape is a good guy, or he'd have run with that information right to Voldie, same as Bellatrix would have done the moment she had something solid on Snape. I don't imagine it's all that pleasant being a DE -- I get the impression that they turn on each other and expose any weakness within the ranks. Probably Voldie rewards that sort of thing. Narcissa figures Snape can help her... but I think she's appealing to his allegedly close relationship with the Dark Lord. I'd guess that Draco probably thinks Snape is a loyal DE -- he just saw him wax Dumbledore at close range and then flee. I mean, hell, wasn't that what HE was supposed to be doing, on the direct orders of V. himself? Draco would have to be smarter than I think he is to figure Snape for one of the good guys at the outset.
Imagine the angst potential, here! I don't know why someone isn't writing this right now, at this very moment. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places... Suggestions on that front are always welcome.
