This film was ... uneven but still enjoyable.
First and foremost, let's be honest. I was not watching this movie because I loved the book. The book was okay but I haven't read it since I was a lot younger. I was not watching this movie to compare and contrast it with Wilder's job as Wonka way back when, though I did enjoy that, too. I was watching this movie because I have what is probably best described as a major hard on for Johnny Depp. He's a very, very pretty man and I like to look at him. Lots. I like to see what he does with characters. I like his cheekbones. I like the way his face moves -- it deflates so gracefully. I like what he does with his eyes. I adored the oh-so-gay vogues in this film, like when Augustus falls in the chocolate river. In short, I really, really liked the riff Depp did with Wonka. He was freaky in a goodly disturbing way. He got great lines. He was delightful. Those who thought there was sort of a King of Pop feel to Wonka, yeah, I can see where they got that. I thought probably that there was an overlay of Mr. Rogers in some of the speech patterns, too, but that may just be me. I loved his voice. Loved. Loved. Loved. Oh, the places I could go. I'm going there, thanks. Off to happy slightly-disturbed-land with me. I don't think, particularly, that all ya'll need any help whatsoever with where I was going with the movie after about the first ten minutes of screen time for Depp. Yes, indeed. He's got a cane. Did you see? Signify!
Other things -- the non-Charlie children annoyed me, but Violet was probably the best of the lot. I also rather liked Mike.
The OompaLoompas were wearing a lot of vinyl bodysuits and I'm not sure that I should, er... Look, they're identical men in vinyl bodysuits. What do you EXPECT me to do with that? They're identical men in vinyl bodysuits doing SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING and SONG AND DANCE NUMBERS. All I can say is pink leather piñata.
The Wonka backstory for Willy's youth -- while I'm fond of any excuse to see Skull, dammit, Skull in a movie, I'm not sure that my experience of the film was enhanced by even more opportunities to, yeah, you know.
The colors were psychedelic and I liked that, too.
Now, bring me that horizon. Er. I am not precisely sick enough to want fanfic of this, but were it thrust upon me, I'd read it.
Also, if you haven't seen it, this is funny stuff on occasion. As with other in-jokes, works best if you have some familiarity with the genre.
